I hear that bro. I have been wanted to teach American History for a Long time, I started out teaching World History which was cool too. But man schools are pure b.s. and kids are slipping too.
We were doing essay outlines like two periods ago. A girl said she wanted to do an essay on Harriet Tubman. She asked me, "Mr. How you expect us to write these essay when we don't know nothing about these people?" I was like come on, you learned about Harriet Tubman plenty of times before.
She said she couldn't outline, not write, but couldn't outline the essay without looking at her notes. They doing American History for a year and a half, their last teacher had them for the whole year and I get them for 4 months and I have to cover from 1900 til the present. I got some serious work to do with these kids.
on a side note, I can't wait to put my thanksgiving poster up this year. Last yeah the white teachers were talking behind my back about how they didn't like it, others felt the need to say they liked it so much because they were scared to say what they really wanted to say, and one told me he was offended because he was Irish.
