Our meeting will focus on Troy Davis case.
Innocence Matters
As you may have heard, the state of Georgia has issued a death warrant for Troy Davis for the week of the 23rd. Any rational human being would realize that Troy is innocent. 7 of 9 witness recanted their testimony and there is no physical evidence. Even the defenders of this system have a hard time saying there is not at least a reasonable doubt.
At the very minimum he should get a new trial or at least get present his new evidence. But, Georgia denied him that right in march in a 4-3 decision without even hearing the new evidence because limits on appeals from the Anti-Terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act. Now, the state has set this warrant so they can kill him before the Supreme Court has a chance to take up the case (the supreme court is scheduled to make a decision to hear the case on the 29th).
Davis was saved from execution last year because his story made headlines and the public put the pressure on the state. After that victory Tory received 20,000 letters and his story has becoming more know because his case is so clear. Coming off of recent victories we have chance to stop his new execution from happening. It will take pressure from all of us to make this happen. You can fax and call before the board of pardons and paroles. His hearing with them is on the 12th of September so try to do it before then but after will help as well.
