Who started it in our culture. I've heard different answers. I've heard it was the men due to sexism and/ or wanting to carry on their bloodline through as many children as possible and so on. When I look at some of the matrifocal societies like the Akan I don't understand how that explanation is the reasoning behind it. Doesn't really add up when I read about how their system works from different websites as well as books such as The Return of the African Mother Principle of Male and Female Equality by Oba T. Shaka. I've also heard it was a system by which everyone would get to pass on their dna into the future and that it worked out this way because these were societies that had more women than men and without it there would be people whose genes would not make it into the future. Nothing is absolute ofcourse. I've also heard about societies where the practice was polyandry because men outnumbered women. Haven't heard about it a whole lot in Africa, but I have in Asia, I believe among the people of Tibet, as well as some of the natives of Alaska. I'm concerned about it in Africa and among Africans where ever they are in the world.
