| Akan & Afa/Vodun Personhood & Community I: Adiama Fall Study-Group Series www.adiama.com/studygroups On behalf of Adiama we are pleased to invite you to join us for our fall study group series: Personhood & Community I. In this series we will once again be focusing on the AKAN (Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire), and AFA/VODUN (Benin, Togo, Ghana, Haiti) systems respectively. Over the course of 6 weeks our approach will be to: (1) Engage Afrikan cultural systems as essential to the achievement of Abibifahodie (Afrikan Liberation) and inseparable from the work of nationbuilding/the goal of sovereignty (2) Employ Afrikan culture and spirituality as instruments/tools of resistance (3) Study Afrikan cultural systems using Afrikan languages as the primary tool to unlock the door to the wisdom of our Nananom/Tɔvɔdun (4) Move towards a clearer understanding of the present generations mission/purpose for engaging Afrikan cultural/spiritual systems as a continuation and further perpetuation of the work of nationbuilding and the goal of sovereignty. ALL STUDY GROUPS ARE RESERVED FOR AFRIKAN (BLACK) PEOPLE ONLY. ALL AFRIKAN (BLACK) PEOPLE WORKING TOWARDS THE LIBERATION OF AFRIKAN (BLACK) PEOPLE ARE WELCOME TO JOIN US. RSVP TODAY! ADIAMA PRESENTS: PERSONHOOD & COMMUNITY I A SIX-WEEK STUDY GROUP SERIES Starting Nov. 2nd 2008 Sundays 3:00 - 6:30 p.m. Omenala-Griot Museum 337 Dargan Pl. SW Atlanta, GA 30310 FREE 2-PART LECTURE AKAN & AFA/VODUN PERSONHOOD & COMMUNITY SUNDAY OCT. 19TH 2008 OMENALA-GRIOT MUSEUM 337 Dargan Pl. SW Atlanta, GA 30310 AKAN PERSONHOOD & COMMUNITY I Facilitator: Kwadwo Gyasi Nkita-Mayala Sundays 3:00 - 4:30 p.m. Location: Omenala-Griot Museum Cost: $99.00 ![]() In part I of this dynamic series we will examine Akan history and culture within the context of our ongoing quest for Total Afrikan Liberation. In so doing, we will not rely solely on the writings and/or languages of our enemies, rather we will ground our enquiry in the Akan (Twi) language focusing on indigenous sources including mmɛ (proverbs), abakɔsɛm ne anansesɛm (ourstorical and narrative stories), nnwom (songs) and more to elucidate the wisdom of our Nananom (Ancestors). This is definitely a series you don't want to miss! As always, each person enrolled in this study group will be seen as both a teacher and a student. You are therefore actively encouraged to contribute and share your own knowledge and experiences with the collective. Prior knowledge about Akan traditions is not necessary and will not be assumed. We look forward to a powerful session! Week 1 Akan Worldview: Owuo (Death) Week 2 Concept of a Person: Sunsum Week 3 Tradition & Resistance: The Akan Presence in Suriname Maroon Communities Week 4 Traditional Communal Institutions: Nnɔboadie Week 5 Awareɛ (Marriage) Week 6 The Role of Mpanimfoɔ (Elders) AFA/VODUN PERSONHOOD & COMMUNITY I Facilitator: Ason Ajinaku Sundays 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. Location: Omenala-Griot Museum Cost: $99.00 ![]() Our mission in this discourse is to bring forth a deeper understanding of the AFA/Vodun tradition. Vodun in particular has historically been extremely demonized by our enemies. The reason for this can be attributed to the fact that Vodun was the focal point of some of the largest rebellions during the Maafa. The Haitian revolution, the Seven Finger High Glisters of the Dismal Swamp, and the Hundun(hoodooo)/Root Doctor tradition throughout the North American south are a few instances of the Vodun contribution of Afrikan resistance in the Diaspora. Week 1 Afa/Vodun Worldview: Ku (Death) Week 2 Concept of the Person: Se Kpoli Week 3 Tradition & Resistance: The Ewe/Fon Presence in Suriname Maroon Communities Week 4 Traditional Communal Institutions: Dokpwe/Combit Week 5 Akwenusi & Xadudo (Marriage) Week 6 Xenu Daho (Family Elders)
