A new report in the New England Journal of Medicine reveals US, Canadian and British health and life insurance firms hold at least $4.4 billion of investments in companies whose subsidiaries manufacture cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco and related products. We speak with the co-author of the report, Dr. Wesley Boyd. [includes rush transcript]



There should be no doubt that the insurance companies are not interested in health but money and they MUST be removed from any part in the health system of the United States. They are not to be bartered with or considered when determining the reforms to made to health care. Health care can NEVER primarily be a profit making endeavor...and any sane society understands this.

I remember reading in Robert Kayaski's book "Rich dad, Poor dad", and I quote, to the best of my memory, that "you should invest in things you love". Now my stomach hurts.

Tua for your replies. It is completely absurd that these companies will not pay for you to join a gym or participate in a yoga or martial arts class but will pay to invest in tobacco. That is telling.
