You Research It: A Holistic Health and Wellness Resource for the Afrikan and Native American Community

Leticia A. Martinez, HHP 'Nierika' and Joanie A. Martinson have launched their collaborative effort to help bring Holistic Health and Wellness education to the Afrikan and Native American Community.

Both women realize that people within their cultures have neglected to care for their health and well being, having abandoned traditional healing methods as a means of preventative health care. Many have adopted poor nutritional habits eating outside of their native dietary staples which have contributed to a rise in many health crises such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer and other organ system dysfunctions.

The resource site will include articles on holistic health and wellness for the entire family (including pets), traditional food recipes, how-to instructions on handcrafts, bodycare items and health remedies. Featuring videos, daily Twitter updates along with articles on green housekeeping, fair trade products, as well as articles on topical issues regarding Afrikans and Native Americans. Although the site focuses upon Afrikan and Native American Wisdom Traditions and health concerns, all readers are invited to learn more about Alternative Health.

Nierika is a Clinical Medical Assistant, Nationally Certified Massage Therapist, Holistic Beauty Therapist, Holistic Health Practitioner and holds a Certificate of Cosmetic Technology. She has spent over 20 years studying and practicing herbal medicine, physical medicine disciplines of indigenous healing and energy work. Nierika has a background in conventional medical arts and is also following a Native American familial legacy of healing and herbal medicine being a 4th generation Yaqui-Kumeyaay healer.

Joanie is an Afrikan woman, residing in the United States of America. She is fond of the Native American saying, “Before you criticize or accuse me, walk a mile in my moccasins.” Joanie states that, “Everyone is shaped by their environment and ideas. Thoughts and opinions play a part in how we react to information we receive from others until we start thinking in a more independent manner.” On choosing the name of this new project, Joanie replied that, “You must look out for number one, and have a willingness to sift through and find out if you’re looking at true-facts…or true-lies. It’s your health; your life, so don’t just believe the hype. You research it!”
