I voted ...

"I keep up w/ news in Afrika. I know current leaders, political parties, challenges, etc."

BUT...I also want to point out that I try to stay up on what's going on in the African diaspora as well (i.e. Haiti and the Caribbean, Brazil and the so-called Latin Americas, and etc.).

Thumbs up

Hotep fam!,
I try my best to keep in touch wit what is goin on in the AFREE-KAN WORLD PERIOD! WHETHER IT BE THE CONTINENT OR THE DIASPORA!! especially the Caribbean, South America, the usa, canada etc.my friend here in mtl. is the editor of a newspaper called the AFRICAN AFFAIRS which deals specifically wit the latest news from the Afree-kan Continent etc. so i keep up 2 date thru her publication. plus i am also subscribed to the blacklist.net dat deals wit the Afree-kan Continent and the Diaspora.

Generally, i try my best to keep up to date at all times although i can say that personally i receive more info and concentrate more of my time on West Afree-kan issues etc. seeing that i was there b4 and i am familiar w/ some of the culture(s), the language(s) and the ppl(s) etc. i also have friends in Ghana that i communicate often w/ by email and they keep me updated on issues in Ghana and other neighbouring countries etc.i think that dealing wit the Afree-kan continent as a whole is very very broad and can be overwhelming therefore i concentrate my energy and time on a certain region and on certain countries that i am already familiar with....i like to keep in touch w/ the traditional festivals that take place in Ghana and other festive activities that are conducted thruout the yr.since i have friends living there it is pretty easy for me to know what is goin on in that specific country.

SANKOFA!,

I must say, I'm surprised at the statistics in this poll so far.

Alot of it has to do with the fact that many diasporic Afrikans are not educated about what happened to Afrika after our enslaved ancestors were taken. Most are still catching up on what happened before yt even showed up, or some of us, (not necessarily members of this forum), are unconcerned about Afrika because we don't see ourselves as Afrikan, and therefore think it to be unrelated to us personally.

Needless to say, it's something of importance. We need to stay on top of what is going on wherever our people may be!

Perhaps those of us who are on top of what's going on can be an aid to those of us who feel overwhelmed.

E se for your post, MS

For me personally its really hard to take anyone serious who talks about African Liberation but yet doesn't know whats presently going on in the continent. Liberation must be centered around today and not so much yesterday, yesterday is the root of today.

Being caught up on African news in the diaspora as well as the motherland is a must.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how we can use the forums to address the issue of people feeling overwhelmed by the information presented in Afrikan World News?

I would encourage anybody who has any questions about a specific situation in any Afrikan country to come forward and ask the questions. There is no shame in seeking knowledge! There is only shame in preventing yourself from acquiring knowledge. We can then address the questions and try to put the answers in the simplest form possible.

I also encourage anybody who has a tough time keeping up on news to focus on one situation/country at a time and once you understand that one, move on to the next. This will prevent mixing up names, leaders, statistics, or whatever else your are presented with.

A good way to start becoming knowledgable about Afrika is to start right here in the forums. Go to search and type in a country and read the threads that are associated with that country. As you read acquaint yourself with the policies, leaders, etc that are affecting that area. You will be amazed what you can learn if you focus on a country a day/week!

This is just one suggestion!

Uhuru!

I also use to be concerned of the waves and structure of news when it comes to Afrika, but existing forums like these gives me a sigh of hope. More than anything is the pride and realization of Afrikans all over the universe, That we the are "GODS OF OUR TIME"

I personally follow the material presented here or at the university. To be honest, I am consumed with freeing the Afrikans in this country. It is trying at times, but I stay current. Issues arise on a daily basis, i find it easier to deal with those that are in front of me, Like improving the conditions that lead to social cannibalism, homelessness, and education. However, I am open to any info...keep posting and I'll keep reading
