Morocco returns immigrants to their homelands

Guelmim - In the week since it began repatriating illegal immigrants, Morocco has airlifted more than 2 000 West Africans to their countries of origin.

More than 1 600 migrants were sent back to Mali and Senegal from the north before operations were switched at the weekend to a military base here.

The airlifts are a response to a surge in illegal immigration accompanied by violence, with at least 14 deaths, around Spain's enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla.

According to official figures, 1 117 Senegalese and 1 031 Malians have been sent home. The expulsions have been taking place in the presence of diplomats from the migrants' countries. - Sapa-AFP
