| Rare uncontacted tribe photographed in Amazon ![]() Members of an unknown Amazon Basin tribe and their dwellings are seen during a flight over the Brazilian state of Acre along the border with Peru in this May, 2008 photo distributed by FUNAI, the government agency for the protection of indigenous peoples. Survival International estimates that there are over 100 uncontacted tribes worldwide, and says that uncontacted tribes in the region are under increasing threat from illegal logging over the border in Peru. (Funai-Frente de Proteção Etno-Ambiental Envira/Handout/Reuters) More Photos>>> Uncontacted Amazonian tribe photographed - Yahoo! News Photos Amazon Indians from one of the world's last uncontacted tribes have been photographed from the air, with striking images released on Thursday showing them painted bright red and brandishing bows and arrows. The photographs of the tribe near the border between Brazil and Peru are rare evidence that such groups exist. A Brazilian official involved in the expedition said many of them are in increasing danger from illegal logging. "What is happening in this region is a monumental crime against the natural world, the tribes, the fauna and is further testimony to the complete irrationality with which we, the 'civilized' ones, treat the world," Jose Carlos Meirelles was quoted as saying in a statement by the Survival International group. One of the pictures, which can be seen on Survival International's Web site (Survival International - the movement for tribal peoples), shows two Indian men covered in bright red pigment poised to fire arrows at the aircraft while another Indian looks on. Another photo shows about 15 Indians near thatched huts, some of them also preparing to fire arrows at the aircraft. "The world needs to wake up to this, and ensure that their territory is protected in accordance with international law. Otherwise, they will soon be made extinct," said Stephen Corry, the director of Survival International, which supports tribal people around the world. Of more than 100 uncontacted tribes worldwide, more than half live in either Brazil or Peru, Survival International says. It says all are in grave danger of being forced off their land, killed and ravaged by new diseases. | The more we don't read about these people possibly the better off they are...
I think the photo says it all as it looks like their shooting at the helicopter... As long as they keep firing those arrows at everything and every stranger that moves on two legs they’ll be alright (for a while…) I remember there were once some African maroons who were also living outside of the grasp of Europeans in the isolated jungles of Brazil, and they were just contacted and studied roughly 20 or 30 years go. These Africans supposedly broke free as soon as the slave ships landed and ran into the wilderness. I think these people prove you CAN live without all of this so-called modernization and sure there is lot to learn from them, but to disturb their peace is to destroy them by disease and all other modern ills. There are a few organizations that attempt to protect these people aboriginal sovereignty... Thanks for this article Sister Jahness, deep story and almost hard to phantom..but thank goodness it's true...

Before you know it all the ones who don't die off will be working 16 hrs a day, wearing hand-me down air jordans while drinking coca-cola (which will cost probably a week pay a 6-pack), and don't forget the firewater (rot gut cheap liquor), and playboy magazines (the elusive white woman...the other dope!)! I just hope they can hold off as long as they can...

I agree with all that has been said. Sis. Jahness, thanks for posting the article. This type of propaganda never ceases to amaze me. The article says: "It says all are in grave danger of being forced off their land, killed and ravaged by new diseases." This statement may lead laypeople to think that this tribe and others like it might need "help" from the "civilized world" when the truth is that they've done well on their own for centuries now. What they should add is that the tribes are in danger of being forced off their land, killed and ravaged by uncouth Europeans with agendas.

If this global system keeps unraveling both economically and the weather, we all might be living in the wilderness soon. History proves that all top heavy structured societies eventually fall and the people usually go back to a simpler way of living to survive. And let's not forget, if these people's habitats are destroyed, than that means the majority of the rainforest's will be gone, and the trees in these areas supply most of the world's breathable oxygen.

Greetings Everyone! The fact that these people have not had contact with the outside world is a good thing indeed. Now that others have found out where they are it will only be a matter of time before they become someones thesis for some degree they are trying to get. white folks just cannot leave things alone much less people in their natural environment. They always have to document, kill, interpret, and give their expertise on things that they have no idea about. They will disturb and distress these poor people until they have given them some sort of disease to kill them off. Before that happens though they will also make sure they have someone who can halfway probably speak the language and do all types of negotiations in the name of the indigenous folks and before you know it they end up selling them, their artifacts, land, sacred rituals, anything cultural and their assets off to the highest bidding person and museum. Sad to say it is downhill from here for these people. Their freedom and everything else will be taken away from them just like they did to all other black and brown peoples of this planet. Time will tell. But I hope the governments of Brazil and Peru will protect them, but they may not be able too since the majority of the rain forest and anything of value in these countries have been sold off and stolen already in one way or the next by the developing world anyways. Much thanks to everyone for taking the time to share your valuable comments on this issue. Peace & Blessings!

Excellent response Sister Jahness... You know these people are between a rock and a hard place; either they allow themselves to be studied and possibly somewhat protected, or if left unknown the robber-baron foresters, who were insisting these people never existed on land they wanted to deforest, would have murdered these people in their sleep and buried them in the jungle somewhere all in the name of progress and profit. ![]() Quote:
