| Deportation 101
DEPORTATION 101: A FREE daylong training for service providers, organizers, and advocates WHEN: Friday, February 11, 2005, 10am to 4pm *OR* Saturday, February 26, 2004, 12 noon to 5pm WHERE: NYU Law School, 245 Sullivan Street, New York, NY WHO: Families For Freedom, Immigrant Defense Project, and NYU Immigrant Rights Clinic Since 1996 over 1.2 million people have been deported. Immigrants are the fastest growing segment of the US prison population. With 12% of inmates foreign-born, New York State has the highest ratio of immigrants in its prison population. Service providers, organizers, advocates and activists must confront deportation in their day to day work in criminal justice, housing, worker rights, and mental health issues - often without the resources to deal with it. Yet there are basic steps that we can ALL take to defend immigrant rights! On February 11th and February 26th, Families For Freedom, the Immigrant Defense Project of NYSDA, and the NYU Immigrant Rights Clinic will hold daylong trainings on deportation and criminal immigration. We will discuss topics including: - Overview of detention and deportation systems - What puts you at risk of detention and deportation - What is the process - Special issues facing immigrants in the criminal justice system - Service and advocacy strategies for people facing deportation or at-risk - Referrals and documentation - Addressing needs of immigrant families, and strategies for the future We will also provide written materials, including fact sheets and self-help materials for immigrants facing deportation. Please RSVP by February 7th by completing the registration form below and returning via email/fax to subhash@familiesforfreedom.org, or 212-363-8533. For more information, please contact: *NYSDA Immigrant Defense Project (212-898-4134, bjain@nysda.org) or *Families for Freedom (212-898-4121, subhash@familiesforfreedom.org) The training will bring different service providers, community organizers, advocates, and activists committed to anti-deportation work together to share information. We expect that many of you are already working with immigrant and criminal justice communities. We encourage you to bring any resource materials to share with us and other participants. *Families For Freedom is an immigrant defense network by and for families facing deportation. The Immigrant Defense Project provides back-up legal support to criminal defense attorneys, immigration advocates and immigrants facing deportation due to criminal convictions.* ---------------------------------------- DEPORTATION 101 Training Registration Form Name: Organization (if applicable): Address: Phone:____________ Fax:___________ E-mail:_______________ *Which Training Day Will You Attend?
