CHICAGO – The Nation of Islam, a secretive movement generally closed to outsiders, has planned a rare open-to-the public event at its Chicago-based headquarters in what the Minister Louis Farrakhan deemed a "new beginning" for the group. Hundreds of religious leaders of different faiths have been invited to the event planned for Sunday, a rededication of the group's historic Mosque Maryam on the city's South Side. Farrakhan is scheduled to speak. "We have restored Mosque Maryam completely, and we will dedicate it to the universal message of Islam, and the universal aspect of the teachings of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad," Farrakhan said in an invitation letter. "It represents for the Nation of Islam, a new beginning." The event comes just weeks after the death of Imam W.D. Mohammed, the son of Nation founder Elijah Muhammad, who broke with the group and moved thousands of African-Americans toward mainstream Islam. The Nation purchased the mosque, a former Greek Orthodox church, in 1972 and has since been making renovations. The stately 1948 structure, embellished with a golden dome and topped with an Islamic crescent moon, is adorned with Quranic verses in Arabic. Experts say opening the mosque's doors to the public is a calculated move. "It is a very conscious effort to open the mosque up to the community and to rededicate the community to learning about Islam," said Aminah McCloud, a professor of Islamic studies at DePaul University. "Previously, the Nation has been open to people coming to visit it, but its members don't generally go anywhere else ... now there is a concerted effort." While the Nation has espoused black nationalism and self-reliance since it was founded in the 1930s, in recent years members have reached out to other groups. For instance, the Nation has a Latino liaison and has become involved in immigrant rights rallies and marches. Also, the Minister Ishmael Muhammad, a top assisting minister at the mosque and widely thought to be a potential successor to Farrakhan, has talked about unity between all people, at times speaking in Spanish. Farrakhan, 75, has haltingly tried to move the Nation toward traditional Islam, which considers the American movement heretical because of its view of Elijah Muhammad as a prophet — among other novel teachings. Orthodox Islam teaches that there has been no prophet after Prophet Muhammad in the seventh century. He's also played down some of the group's more controversial beliefs. The Nation of Islam has taught that whites are descended from the devil and that blacks are the chosen people of Allah. The event on Sunday also wraps up a week of events marking the 13th anniversary of the Million Man March, which Farrakhan began in 1995. That year, hundreds of thousands of people traveled to Washington, D.C. to participate. On Thursday, Farrakhan spoke to inmates at Cook County jail urging self improvement, atonement and reconciliation, principles the Million Man March promoted. Those values "can help reduce violence and anti-social behavior ... and have universal significance and will benefit those willing to listen," according to a statement from the Nation. Farrakhan's Sunday speech will mark his second major public address this year and is among several smaller community and religious events he has attended. His public appearances have surprised many since in 2006, he seceded leadership to an executive board while recuperating from serious complications from prostate cancer. In February, Farrakhan appeared at an annual Saviours' Day event in Chicago and called Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama the "hope of the entire world" that the U.S. will change for the better. The Obama campaign quickly denounced Farrakhan's support, because of past comments about Jews that many have called offensive. In the past months, Farrakhan has attended funeral services of W.D. Mohammed and Jabir Herbert Muhammad, both sons of the late Elijah Muhammad.

| Farrakhan: A 'new beginning' for Nation of Islam
Farrakhan: A 'new beginning' for Nation of Islam By RUPA SHENOY and SOPHIA TAREEN The Associated Press October 19, 2008 Nation of Islam Minister Louis Farrakhan stressed unity among religions, while still preaching a message of black empowerment, at a rare public event Sunday deemed 'a new beginning' for the Chicago-based movement. In the nearly two-hour speech, Farrakhan covered topics including immigration, public schools, violence and morality. He vaguely referred to the presidential election but did not specifically mention any candidates. 'We are all in a journey to become complete human beings,' the 75-year-old Farrakhan told the crowd of thousands gathered inside Mosque Maryam and in white tents outside. 'Look how we have become so divided, so hateful, while claiming the same creator.' Farrakhan renewed a call for many to get back to the basic tenets of Islam, while still encouraging black pride. 'Black people must stop seeing themselves as inferior, and whites must stop seeing themselves as superior,' he said, adding that black Muslims 'have to keep going our own way.' Though other religious leaders and non-Muslims were invited to the public event, most of those in attendance were Nation of Islam followers. Farrakhan did not lay out any specific plans for the 'new beginning,' but he offered his opinion on many topics and made a plea for understanding with immigrants south of U.S. borders. 'Our brothers and sisters from South America are not trying to take your jobs. They are trying to survive,' Farrakhan said. Noting the current economic turmoil, he said, 'God is troubling America because America can do better.' He noted the theme of 'change' in the presidential election and said change must also come through religious communities. 'The change that will feed our hearts is not necessarily a political change,' he said. 'Our mission is to help bring in a government of peace.' In February, Farrakhan appeared at an annual Saviours' Day event in Chicago and called Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama the 'hope of the entire world' that the U.S. will change for the better. The Obama campaign quickly denounced Farrakhan's support because he has made comments in the past widely viewed as being anti-Semitic. Nation of Islam officials said Farrakhan's statements are often taken out of context. The event comes just weeks after the death of Imam W.D. Mohammed, the son of Nation founder Elijah Muhammad, who broke with the group and moved thousands of African-Americans toward mainstream Islam. While the Nation has espoused black nationalism and self-reliance since it was founded in the 1930s, in recent years members have reached out to other groups. For instance, the Nation has a Latino liaison and has become involved in immigrant rights rallies and marches. Farrakhan has haltingly tried to move the Nation toward traditional Islam, which considers the American movement heretical because of its view of Elijah Muhammad as a prophet, among other novel teachings. Orthodox Islam teaches that there has been no prophet after Prophet Muhammad in the seventh century. He has also downplayed some of the group's more controversial beliefs. The Nation of Islam has taught that whites are descended from the devil and that blacks are the chosen people of Allah. Sunday's event was a rededication to the historic 1948 building. The mosque, once a Greek Orthodox church, has undergone major renovations, including getting new marble floors, since it was bought by the Nation in 1972. It also wrapped up a week of commemoration of the 13th anniversary of the Million Man March, a political gathering in Washington that encouraged the empowerment of blacks and that Farrakhan spearheaded in 1995.

Now this is interesting. Why do some black americans worship muslim faith. Now why did they join a faith, that created mass african slavery, butchered the african christian kingdoms. Took african slaves up east coast africa that was 10 times worse than middle passage. still practice african slavery, still butchering africans, still castrates old way young african boys make eunuks. AND the fun muslim time why out of 10 of millians of afraicans, and over a million and a quater whites taken as slaves north africa mid east. Are thier not many white or black people those countries. Lets see in americas white bred african slaves did not butcher, but the arabs and thier african brothers butchered african slaves, as they chap to replace. 1 egyption slave market in one slow day sold 20.000 african men women and children, A.K.A in 1 day all slave markets of cairo sold over 100,000 african men women and children. And does ya no people that thier are black americans decended from african slavers, yepity yepity ya see the whity could not get far into africa. But african kings sold other africans to whity, but when those african slavers became of no use they was captured and taken to america as slaves.. Just think when you as a student look at a teacher now is the black teacher decended from african salvers. Or is the student decended from african slavers. Funy in sudan its christans saving african children especialy child soldiers, but its muslims who capture and brain wash african children to comit butchery. Quite funy realy aint it, butchery by muslims of black and brown skined people around the world. |

Wouldn't a more appropriate question be to query where are the critics of these practices? The faith in the principles of righteousness have nothing to do with the actions of unrighteousness anymore than the practice of Yoruba has anything to do with the practice of many Oyo during the slave trade.. those who practice Voodoo are connected with the Dahomey tribe or those who follow Ma'at are connected by the atrocities of the late Pharaohs.. Why does Farrakhan care about immigration, public schools (when The Nation has the University of Islam), and violence (that does not affect his followers) ??? The Honorable Elijah Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him) taught SEPARATION, not INTEGRATION. He taught that his mission was to deliver the message. It was up to those who heard it to ACCEPT it or REJECT it. And so, the troubles facing America are the beginnings of woes, to be suffered by those who REJECTED THE MESSAGE. If Farakhan were Truly in tune with the teachings he claims to REPRESENT, then he would understand this and not be tying to fix what's wrong with America. The Honorable Elijah Muhammad, (PBUH) told us that America is going to FALL. Farrakhan obviously does not believe the teachings. He demonstrates this by and through his actions, regardless to what he says out of his mouth. |

However, those of us who do take the Old Islam as their religion simply do not know the history. |

This says it all... The UNIVERSAL MESSAGE OF ISLAM is nothing more than so-called orthodox Islam, the same thing Farrakhan followed Wallace (Warith) Deen Muhammad into backin 1976. |
