South Africa: Penis Trap Invented for Rapists

A South African woman has invented a tampon-sized device that women can wear inside their vaginas that attaches itself to a penis and must be surgically removed. South Africa has the highest reported rate of rape in the world, with 1.5 million rapes reported annually in the country.
One of South Africa's leading anti-rape activists, Charlene Smith, called the penis trap "male-hating" and "vengeful, horrible and disgusting," saying that the woman who invented it "needs help." Smith said that women should be focusing more on educating men not to rape. But the inventor of the device, Sonette Ehlers, explained, "I'm not an educator. I will go for those they can't educate."

Other anti-rape activists are concerned that widespread use of the penis trap will lead to greater violence against women by men in retaliation for having their penises cut up. In addition, some feminists say that women and girls shouldn't have to bear the responsibility for putting a penis-cutting device inside themselves in order to survive or adapt to rape.

i see all sides. men are not animals. nor are women. the device is bizarre. but in a country where for a few years you can buy devices that killed car jackers what do you expect? its not male hating. its just over the top. it makes innocent women become predators. its as problematic as getting your little brother inducted in the neighborhood gang so he wont be killed, when the actual result is that you know put him in the hands of people that will train HIM to be the killer now. you really never avoided the problem at all. i dont like the idea of women that are hardened in this way. although she should be allowed and encouraged some kind of weapon or learn some form of self defense.

we must prepare people for parenthood and then train singles for parenthood, and then train corporate types for parenthood and then train entertainment types for parenthood - and then raise children to be better adults.

right now we leave parenting up to parents. then we go and expose their children to all kinds of crap. we make poor movies. poor music. poor advertising. poor food. poor schools. we train them to idolize our adult ways. then we tell the parent "its your fault. you dont know how to raise your child." anyone within proximity to a child is its parent. even if you never speak. your actions trian them. if you are walking down the street and you curse and notice a child walking along YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO APOLOGIZE and tell them to never curse like you. to be BETTER than you someday. but today, we say "every man or even child to themselves" so some of these men grow to be rapists and we think its a "man" problem. its an US problem.

and i have to ask - every device malfunctions eventually - so what happens when this tears the inside of some woman's womb and she bleeds to death? will we forgo sueing the woman that invented it because she was just trying to do a public good or will put her in the ulitimate trap? prison. because she too was a victim of not being raised in a village as much as the men that rape like wild beasts.

|Personally, I agree. I don't know what South Africa's gun laws are like,
|but I'm sure they're repressive, and that guns aren't largely available.

As for privately owned guns, it's mostly legal only for the rich.
Not too many poor people, the median wage in South Africa is about $2
US per hour, can afford a gun safe (and the floor they are required to
bolt it too unless the safe weighs more than 300kg) which meets the
security standards proscribed by the law.

Too easily circumvented to be effective, sure a few stupid ones will
be caught at first but within an extremely short time word will get
around. Given the brutal nature of rapists in the first place, I
wouldn't be surprised if they started killing or maiming any woman
caught using one of these, despite them removing it before the rape,
as a "lesson" to other women.

Like every African country formerly governed by the Brits (e.g., Zimbabwe), South Africa is a country that, while once the most prosperous country on the continent, has now descended into a hellish nightmare. Since the evil Brit Afrikaners left in 1994 (now gainfully employed as Hollywood villains), rape is an epidemic. The South African Law Commission recently estimated that 1.69 million women are raped each year; other estimates put the figure higher. One person in this article states that more than 40% of those raped are children and that more than 65% of rapes are gang rapes. (A prevalent superstition in South Africa is the belief that sex with a virgin will cure them of AIDS. Young infants are therefore raped as it is most assured that a 2-year old is a ‘virgin’). A clever South African woman has invented what is being called the ‘rat trap’:

The tampon-like device, invented by a woman, supposedly protects women from rapists by cutting into a man’s penis. The device, which Sonette Ehlers, its inventor, has patented, is worn like a tampon but is hollow. In the event of a rape, she said that it would fold around the rapist’s penis and attach itself with microscopic hooks. It is impossible to remove the clamped device without medical intervention.
