| Troy davis rally today (9/11)!
Troy Anthony Davis, wrongfully convicted at age 20 of killing a police officer, is scheduled to be executed by the state of Georgia on Sept 23. However he has a clemency hearing this Friday, Sept 12. Info on where to email, fax and call is below. Coming off of recent victories we have chance to stop this execution and travesty of justice from happening. If you are in the Atlanta area, see below for information about a rally on Thursday evening at the State Capitol. Forwarded from Bay Area Campaign to End the Death Penalty (CEDP), Troy Davis' website Troy Anthony Davis , and Amnesty International USA. Innocence Matters As you may have heard, the state of Georgia has issued a death warrant for Troy Davis for the week of the 23rd. Any rational human being would realize that Troy is innocent. 7 of 9 witness recanted their testimony and there is no physical evidence. Even the defenders of this system have a hard time saying there is not at least a reasonable doubt. At the very minimum he should get a new trial or at least get present his new evidence. But, Georgia denied him that right in march in a 4-3 decision without even hearing the new evidence because limits on appeals from the Anti-Terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act. Now, the state has set this warrant so they can kill him before the Supreme Court has a chance to take up the case (the supreme court is scheduled to make a decision to hear the case on the 29th). Davis was saved from execution last year because his story made headlines and the public put the pressure on the state. After that victory Tory received 20,000 letters and his story has becoming more know because his case is so clear. Coming off of recent victories we have chance to stop his new execution from happening. It will take pressure from all of us to make this happen. You can fax and call before the board of pardons and paroles. His hearing with them is on the 12th of September so try to do it before then but after will help as well. The best place to email from is here, they have the information all laid out: Take Action Online | Amnesty International USA | Human Rights Action or Take Action Online | Amnesty International USA | Human Rights Action This is the information for the Board of Paroles and Pardons for Georgia: State Board of Pardons and Paroles 2 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, SE Suite 458, Balcony Level, East Tower Atlanta, Georgia 30334-4909 Telephone: (404) 657-9350 This is the Fax Number for the Chair of the Board of Paroles and Pardons: L. A plea from Troy Davis Where is the Justice for me? In 1989 I surrendered myself to the police for crimes I knew I was innocent of in an effort to seek justice through the court system in Savannah, Georgia USA. But like so many death penalty cases, that was not my fate and I have been denied justice. During my imprisonment I have lost more than my freedom, I lost my father and my family has suffered terribly, many times being treated as less than human and even as criminals. In the past I have had lawyers who refused my input, and would not represent me in the manner that I wanted to be represented. I have had witnesses against me threatened into making false statements to seal my death sentence and witnesses who wanted to tell the truth were vilified in court. For the entire two years I was in jail awaiting trial I wore a handmade cross around my neck, it gave me peace and when a news reporter made a statement in the local news, “Cop-killer wears cross to court,” the cross was immediately taken as if I was unworthy to believe in God or him in me. The only time my family was allowed to enter the courtroom on my behalf was during the sentencing phase where my mother and sister had to beg for my life and the prosecutor simply said, “I was only fit for killing.” Where is the Justice for me, when the courts have refused to allow me relief when multiple witnesses have recanted their testimonies that they lied against me? Because of the Anti-Terrorism Bill, the blatant racism and bias in the U.S. Court System, I remain on death row in spite of a compelling case of my innocence. Finally I have a private law firm trying to help save my life in the court system, but it is like no one wants to admit the system made another grave mistake. Am I to be made an example of to save face? Does anyone care about my family who has been victimized by this death sentence for over 16 years? Does anyone care that my family has the fate of knowing the time and manner by which I may be killed by the state of Georgia? I truly understand a life has been lost and I have prayed for that family just as I pray for mine, but I am Innocent and all I ask for is a True Day in a Just Court. If I am so guilty why do the courts deny me that? The truth is that they have no real case; the truth is I am Innocent. Where is the Justice for me? By Troy A.
