"I'm not what you call me; I am what I respond to." - Afrikan Proverb -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Akwaaba! Here we go again. It amazes me to witness Mwalimu K. Bomani Baruti's consistent, fruitful useful writings while b n an educator in his home school, Akoben. A son, husband and father! After completing an obstacle course through Chicago St. U. & Atlanta's "famed" Morehouse College, both he and his loyal wife, Ena Yaa, resigned teaching positions at Morehouse; estatblished a home school (shula) to truly educate their daughter and other children whose parents yearned for alternatives to America's Public School indoctrination experimental camps. They named it Akoben or "war horn" the Akan symbol of vigilance and wariness. The horn is used to sound a battle cry. The latest work, which I thought was Asafo, is COMPLEMENTARITY: Thoughts for Afrikan Warrior Couples, rounds up Sex Imperative, Homosexuality & Effeminization of Afrikan Males and Asafo all directed to Afrikan Men & Women. Allow me to quote a bit from his preface and the last chapter. He says: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "When I was growing up, my parents consciously endeavored to show me both what I should strive to become as well as what I should reject at all costs. They knew that corruption could easily blindside anyone, especially the ignorant. The same applies to Afrikans, for most of us are still children culturally, unaware of the depth of our European confusion, all the while struggling to fin our Afrikan way." The 11th and final chapter is titled: A Luta Continua. He honors Marcus Mosiah Garvey by quoting his words. "All of us may not live to see the higher accomplishment of an African Empire -- so strong and powerful, as to compel the respect of mankind, but we in our life-time can so work and act as to make the dream (vision) a possibilty within another generation." A very very very high goal, like aiming to reach the heights of The Sun! Let's continue to peek into Complementarity... "The couple is the bedrock of the nation. Without it there is no family, no people. Without couples there can be no family to procreate and rear confident, untroubled, anchored children. Without the family, no viable, community respecting generation can be born to continue the process of life, living, building and defending. The complements in Afrikan unions must be whole, individually and as one. They must be able to trust themselves and each other implicitly. And that is what makes it imperative that we carefully choose our mates for Afrikan reasons. We must choose with vision. For we are the vanguard. A Luta Continua is KiSwahili for 'the struggle continues.' And so it must be with Afrikan complements. We know that freedom is not free. We know that any true self-determining independence is an intergenerational process, which can only continue through our responsible, committed and conscious efforts as Afrikan centered couples. Our inalienable mission is to be Afrikan, to recreate tradition within a studied, ReAfrikanizing vision. For us, it is a joint, empowering struggle focused on the global Afrikan community's nationbuilding intrests. Our unions have purpose far greater than the wants or needs of either member individually of the couple together. We do not bemoan this privilege. In fact, it is just the opposite. We are soldiers in love with forming beautiful families; rearing happy, thinking children; building strong, lasting communities; raising a mighty nation and removing all enemies. For Afrikan warrior scholar complements, there is no other reason for being." From Complementarity published 2004, by Akoben House P.O. Few more wrinkles to work out; then u'll be able to order online via paypal. Now Im get'n only mail orders along with U.S. Postal Money Orders or similar instrument. Nia Maishani, one of our administrators here, ordered a book from me that way. It took a lil over a week, including turn around.

I started reading this book the other night and have read a significant portion. A benefit of this book would be that fact that it confirms a lot of important ideas within the Afrikan relationship and will re-affirm ideas for us sistahs. Some times we all have to be reminded of these things. One example, " Do not accept anything less than a man, a serious Afrikan man"(page 17). That might seem quite simple on the surface but in practice we need these kind of reminders, this kind of support, this kind of respect. I dont want to spoil the reading for anyone but there are a lot of very powerful quotes and ideas being presented that will benefit you greatly. I've even started writing some of the quotes and proverbs on post it notes putting them where I can view them daily. |

Thanks for making mention of this book. Funny when I started featuring and selling Mwalimu Baruti's book, last year I thought there would be many orders. To date there's been one, from members of this site: Nia Maishani in Feb. '06, who sent a money order. Also again I thank you for trusting my word bfore I returned a book in exchange for Afrikan fabric, that my granddaughter digs very much. I'd hate to think that my conclusion is true: Black folk love to read; but not to buy books by our scholars as a rule. Qualifier: not ALL Black people, just those at the 3 sites, I regularly post information. Presently I've yet to get the help promised for making my domain PayPal ready. Few, like Nia, will do what u and she and I Am Truth did first. But I'm partly at fault: too cheap to spend a lil more for a more expensive hosting site. Guess, I'll have to upgrade that and keep hoping our "conscious" Black folk are sincerely interested in help'n an alive author survive, by both buying and using their relevant knowledges. I must also say here that I Am Truth has helped me anytime of the day or night with problems I'm having with my sites. Oh and I forgot he also has purchased books from me. If I could afford to, I'd give him and Chaos a copy of each of Mwalimu's books!!! Re your wanting to quote from the book, no problema provided full credit is given to the author. Funny, it was Mwalimu who composed a message to Destee to assure her that I had permission to cite and quote his words, verbatim. Just as Ena Marimba Ani did for YURUGU and others who ask only that full credit is given to them. Its an honor to me knowing that most of the Afrikan authors I know follow the same line. Which reminds me, I'll give Mwalimu Baruti your comments about Complementarity. He digs get'n feedback from Afrikan readers. My yung sista keep on keep'n on to prove that WORD IS BOND! To me dat's BlackStanding... Medase pa Kwame
