In regret of the untimely murder of Stan Tookie Williams, and in hope of keeping his work and his movement alive, this debut performance of Youth in Action is offered as a Tribute to Stanley Williams. Keeping youth on a positive path.
THE ARTISTS
Mixtiso Latin Hip Hop
This youth dance ensemble springs from a performing arts program for children, teens and young adults rooted in the multi-ethnic Mission District of San Francisco. It provides young people with a hands-on introduction to musical, dance and theater traditions of the Americas, as well as an opportunity to express themselves on-stage.
Panama & Rico (Reggaton / Hip Hop)
Born in Panama and coming of age in Oakland, cousins Panama & Rico are igniting the local scene with blistering rhymes and beats true to their lives. The message is political and the medium is a party. These two young artists will be releasing solo albums in ’06. Look for Panama’s release on Youth Movement Records.
Trinidad (Ragga Soca / Hip Hop)
One of Youth Movement Records hottest emerging hip hop artists is Trinidad who blends the flavorful sounds of the islands of Trinidad & Jamaica with the street life of Oakland. It’s hard, it’s heavy, it’s positive and as he would say, it’s blazing fyah!!!
Banda Remelexo
This all-female Brazilian percussion band, led by Julio Remelexo (formally of Ile Aiye) is a lively, energetic group known for its complex percussion and inspired dancing with instruments. Drummer Julio Remelexo has played with famous musicians all over the world. He started Banda Remelexo to create an all-woman percussion movement in the US similar to those in Salvador and Bahia, Brazil. Banda Remelexo have performed all over the Bay Area, as well as participating in the Yemanja Festival in Bahia, Brazil.
T-KASH
Rapper T-KASH grew up in Oakland, California, where he was instrumental on projects like Steal This Album by the Bay Area's revolutionary hip-hop group The Coup. For the last seven years he has worked closely with Bay Area radio legend Davey D on KPFA-FM—and his talents as both a lyrist and radio host have gained him national attention. With a fierce focus on musical quality and content, T-KASH is set to do serious damage.
DJ Treatunice
He’s rap royalty in Oakland. Dj for the Company of Prophets and the Attik. Co-host of the popular hip hop party Hella, Treat-U-Nice lives up to his name. He does you right, every time.
Emcee: Mr. Dennis
This multi-talented 18-year-old San Francico State broadcasting major has hosted the Youth Radio show on KPFA for the past three years. He also does on-air reporting for a Spanish-language TV show on TV Azteca, and recently wrapped a UPN TV show called Speak On It.
