3) US OLYMPIC CUP GOLD/SILVER MEDALIST
TO ATTEND SWIM-A-THON

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

World University Games gold medalist and US Olympic Cup Gold/Silver medalist, Alison Terry, will attend The Black Star Line All-Star Swim Team’s first annual swim-a-thon to be held on January 27, 2006 from 4-6 p.m. at Lions Pool, located in Dimond Park, 3860 Hanly Road, Oakland, CA.

The Black Star Line All-Star Swim Team, a predominantly African-American traveling swim team based in Oakland, CA, is hosting this swim-a-thon in order to raise funds to travel to Washington D. C. to compete in the 20th Annual Black History Invitational Swim Meet on February 18-19, 2006, sponsored by the Washington D.C. Department of Parks & Recreation and the Black United Fund. Alison Terry, gold/silver medalist, currently serves on the USA Swimming Diversity/Outreach Task Force, Olympic International Operations Committee and Club Development Committee. Alison Terry, will also provide a swim clinic and motivational conversation for the swimmers on Saturday, January 28 at the Lions Pool at 3pm as they prepare for their competition in the Washington DC Black History Swim Meet.

The purpose of the swim-a-thon is to raise awareness, sponsorship and donations to enable Bay area youth to compete at this event. The meet, approved by USA Swimming (the national governing body for the sport of swimming) will allow local swimmers to have an opportunity to compete against African American swim teams from throughout the United States. In February 2005, approximately 700 swimmers from ages 6 to 18 years competed at this meet. African Americans have historically been under-represented in the sport of swimming: the U.S. Olympic team has had only two black swimmers in its history and of the 140,000 members of USA Swimming nationwide who identified their race via questionnaire, only 1 percent checked African American. USA Swimming, which sanctions 2,700 clubs and the Olympic program, has 280,000 swimmers among its 300,000 members.

The Black Star Line All-Star Swim Team strives for success in teaching youth the importance of setting positive goals and working diligently to achieve those goals. Our team consists of accomplished young athletes who participate in year-round or seasonal swim teams throughout Oakland and the Bay Area. Several swimmers set record times in Oakland Parks and Recreation’s 2005 Citywide Championship, and in other meets throughout the Bay area.

The Black Star Line All-Star Swim Team Booster Club is an Oakland-based organization established to encourage the participation of African-American youth in the sport of swimming both locally in the Bay Area and nationally.
