Black Girls Learn Love Hard poems by Ras Baraka
Moore Black Press of Atlanta, GA is pleased to announce the release of Black Girls Learn Love Hard poems by Ras Baraka. This touching, powerful collection of new work pays homage to the life and courageous spirit of his younger sister Shani, and all women who learn love hard. Ras Baraka has been called "one of the most consistent, courageous, and insightful activists of his generation," and his entire life's work is a commitment to the empowerment of people. The book features a stirring foreword from legendary poet, Sonia Sanchez, and fascinating cover art by renowned NYC based visual artist, Renaldo Davison.
Filled with gripping imagery and poignant prose, Black Girls Learn Love Hard is a critical look at a world that preys on women instead of praising them; a thought provoking investigation into the social and political issues that plague the African American community, and a passionate tribute to the strength and resilience of humanity. His words call society on the carpet for its crimes against women and against African-Americans. There are “call to action” poems like For My Baby Sister, This Way Out and There are some Black men, and very personal insight into his grief and confusion about losing his sister in the first 10 poems

When we were kids we didn't really know
How dangerous the world was
I guess we knew a little
About capitalism, the white man,
Slavery, and unemployment
Even street fights
Jail, crack cocaine
My brother being shot in the head
But….
My sister?
A committed community activist and poet, Ras Baraka edited a pinnacle collection of poetry, In the Tradition (with Kevin Powell) - an anthology of young Black poets (1991). He's appeared on Russell Simmons' Def Poetry on HBO. Currently, Ras is a vice principal at Weequahic High School in Newark, is the former Deputy Mayor of Newark and is currently the City Councilman at-large. He's been called this generation's closet example of Paul Robeson. For Baraka, politics is art is education and his life work represents a principle and passion that is rare among us.
