First what does religion mean? Are you truly looking to learn about various religious or just Christianity, Judaism, and Islam? That's what most people mean with they say religion as if these all similar religions are the only ones. With that in mind umm let's see you have the Bible and the Qu'ran. I have to mention those first because you can't understand religion, in general, from the POV of an outsider but true understanding only comes from an insider. For a more historical base than you should understand the history around those "mythologies". But I'm sure that's not the answer you want but that will teach you the history of those religions. But if you just want to read for a simple African's created these religions historic view of these religions (Christianity, Judaism, and Islam) then check out the books below: The Myth of Exodus and Genesis and the Exclusion of Their African Origins by Yosef Ben-Jochannan A Chronology of the Bible: Challenge to the Standard Version (B.C.P. Pamphlet) by Yosef Ben-Jochannan African Origins of Major "Western Religions" Paperback by Yosef A. A. Ben-Jochannan The Africans Who Wrote the Bible Paperback by Nana Banchie Darkwah Enoch the Ethiopian: The Lost Prophet of the Bible : Greater Than Abraham, Holier Than Moses Paperback by Indus Khamit Cush Biblical History of Black Mankind Paperback by C. Johnson Black Man of the Nile and His Family Paperback by Yosef Ben-Jochannan Holy Lockdown: Does the Church Limit Black Progress? Paperback by Jeremiah Camara Nile Valley Contributions to Civilization (Exploding the Myths) Paperback by Anthony T. Browder We, the Black Jews: Witness to the 'White Jewish Race' Myth, Volumes I & II (in One) Paperback by Yosef A. A. ben-Jochannan From Babylon to Timbuktu: A History of the Ancient Black Races Including the Black Hebrews by Rudolph R. Windsor Destruction of Black Civilization : Great Issues of a Race from 4500 B.C to 2000 A.D. by Chancellor Williams Nile Valley Contributions to Civilization (Exploding the Myths) by Anthony T. | Unbiased Spiritual Books.
There is a book called, The Original Blessing, By Matthew Fox, that talks about pre Constantinian, mystical Chrisitanity. It points out blow by blow how and when the Europeans transformed Christianity to a religion they could use to support empires and European Expansionism. It is out of print, but I am sure you can get it used from amozon, or somewhere. Another is Reclaiming the Religion of Jesus in a Modern Age, by Dr. John W. Gilmore. This book also looks at pre-Constantinian Christianity. It explores Christianity when it was know as the Way. Even before the Apostle Paul and the name Christianity. Through looking at biblical teaching through the teachings of other mystics and giving their words the same value as Jesus´ it points out how The Way, original Christianity, is very valuable today for liberation, freedom and connection with God. It can be purchased at Amazon.com or directly from www.lulu.com by just typing in the title or the authors name. |

This historian is a White guy but I respect his observations on religion and myth and how they fit into the human experience. His name is Joseph Campbell. I agree with the person who said there is no such thing as an unbiased writer or person. At times when a person can observe the goings on of human beings without a passionate eye that person is still called biased by the people who don't agree with him or her. Typozfem |

What our scholars have found is that either, it’s not always the veracity of the the evidence that is in question, but the way it was misconstrued and knowingly misinterpreted, or in a better light, they have come to discover that not all European scholars lied, though their works were usually dismissed, or put on the back shelves of libraries. I also have found the works of Joseph Campbell very fascinating, and he has been considered a distinguished scholar as it applies to interpreting mythology. The works of Joseph Campbell are extensive from documentaries, to lectures, to interviews, let alone his multitude of books, which many can be found in some form be it audio, video, or text files, on the web. The only problem with European scholarship even at it’s fairest and most truthful it will be always jaded and shadowed by the white scholar's European worldview, for these scholars are still interpreting the world through the collective unconsciousness of European cultural thought and behavior. This is where the real work begins as we deracinate their incomplete understanding of the evidence and misguided interpolations from the truth of the matter. Usually they have a hard time including the presence of African people in their deeper interpretations of world events, be it spirituality, religion, philosophy, or technical advancement. This is where Joseph Campbell and many others fall short as they look at mythology and religion in places like India more from of a Brahmanistic or Indo-European Aryan perspective rather than the Africoid (negroid) or Dravidian original spiritual construct or interpretation. It’s not that all European scholars are proactively racist, it’s that they just can’t remove themselves from their intrinsic nurturing, which insulates their thinking from the worldview of others. | African Religion and Philosophy
This text was introduced to me By Dr. Henry Olela who was teaching Philosophy from an African perspective at Clark College during the early '70's. The book is now accepted as a classic in academic circles. It is entitled African Religions and Philosophy by John S. Mbiti. I hope that it is helpful to you.
