We pay homage to this government when we allow them to set agendas for the things that we decide to do. If African history is important to us, why let the government set the stage as to how and when we learn about it? I say, African history is created each and every day, at home and abroad. It's up to us whether or not we choose to recognize our greatness or wait to get the go ahead from white folks. That's why I follow the example of Dr. Barashango and celebrate days that we should all hold sacred, i.e. Garvey's B'day, Malcolm's B'day, Nat Turner's Rebellion, Kwanzaa, etc...... I was kind of upset when Karenga started trying to make Kwanzaa an inclusive celebration and gaining government approval with the US stamp. When have white folks ever sought our approval before they deemed something sacred or worthy of celebration? We've got to get our priorities straight and stop worshiping white folks and their opinions.

Alafia, Withough running the risk of seeming callous, i would ask why must we give a damn what the government's intentions are for Black History Month??? Do they have that much power over our very psyche??? I AM SOULONE.

They may not have power over yours or mine psych. Black History Monty is advertised as nothing more than Black American history month. Through recent years Black American inventors have been included to celebrate. Just look at the magazines such as Jet, Ebony and the rest of most of the media. Its just celebrating American music, politicians, proffesional sports, etc. The month doesnt really define what I do any more than any of the American hollidays. I am Nubian in America year round. To answer the question does Whitey has that much power? Somebody apparently does and has been using it for years. That doesnt mean that it is in the hands long term. Comparing it to time and dark peoples past Whitey has been in control a very short time. And people have a very short time to straighten up their lives and get positively spiritual. |

Black History Month was created by a black historian. A bonafide race man. Black History Month was established in 1926 by Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson.

Mostly it seems that the so called black history month, given to us be the government is practiced in the school. I know a lot of people out of school who dont practice it, not that I blame them. They probaly got tired of hearing the same ole sh*t about intergration, and the fact that they always seem to mention Crispus Attucks, the first black man to die for Amerikkkas fredom but not his own, WTF. It seems that how , and what we know about our history is regulated by the schools. As soon as we denounce their system of education, and put ours in place the sooner we can celebrate real black history everday as whole, instead of there being a big number difference between people who want to learn their true history, and those who just dont care.

Number one, it's not even about whether or not "they" (uh, WHITEY) has that much power. The point is, they do! But we must also question what type of power are we talking about. "They" (uh, whitey) may have control over resources and MONETARY wealth (which is nothing more than an extension of their capture of other people's land and resources), but that, essentially, is the extent of it. Every other type of control takes the willing participation of the subjected and oppressed. In other words, the only control over our minds that "they" (uh, whitey) may have is what we relinquish to them. That was my point. The only control over Black History Month/Afrikan Heritage Month/etc. is what we allow them to have. Number two, if we don't want them to have control over how Black History/Afrikan History Month is portrayed, why not NOT participate in it's debacle? For example, our children are exposed to plays and whatnot at school during the month of February, but who says that it's mandatory for them to participate??? Here's where the support for independent Afrikan Centered schools could cress in our planta...uh, communities. I'll end this with a quote for the imoortal Morpheus, one that i believe is pertinently important: "Your Mind Makes It Real." Peace and respect, I AM SOULONE.

Actually, the idea and implementation for Negro History Week was started by four Omega Psi Phi brothers who were students of Howard University when Dr. Woodson was teaching there. They came to him, as a mentor and wanted to know if he could help them expand what they had been doing on campus, for a few years BEFORE they came to Dr. Woodson. Soular-NRG.

No, i meant that this is the more accurate account of how Negro History Week got started. The fact that they were members of Greek fraternities was merely incidental, imho. Honestly, i can't respond to what they took pride in; i don't know nor have i done the knowledge on that. Alafia, I AM SOULONE.

I dont think it was incidental at all that they were members of a Greek fraternity. Thats not to say some members of such fraternities have woken up and have more accepted their natural being. But nothing in this world happens incidentally.

What is MOST IMPORTANT, IMHO is OUR INTENTIONS and ATTENTION toward AFRICAN HISTORY and AFRICA's FUTURE. I don't think I'd be incorrect to suggest that we "Recovering-Africans" are being fed 'on the way.' The 'way' is FORWARD, AFRICA RISING. OUR History is our guide, and Africans must embrace, own and amplify OUR collective history. We are one people of many nations and neo-nationalities. Our history is not black, it is African (as long as we collectively call ourselves "African" and our homeland "Africa."). As I harness my attention and intentions for 2006, I AM AFRICA. I call all knowledge, truth and overstanding that is Africa/n to me, from every direction and dimension. As AFRICA/N, my past is my present, and wether I am conscious of it or not, creating my FUTURE. That I AM African is my reality, my /giftpower to create. Those who would debate thier history do not own it, for to negotiate "self" is to ask for permission to BE. We Africans are worried about the wrong thing. Why are we still allowing the "State" to educate our children? Until we take total responsibility for our education, we will continue to be mentally mal-nourished and starved of life. We Africans are the problem, the 'State' is going its job.
