Hegewisch rallies against drugs, violence

CHICAGO -- Tenth Ward Alderman John Pope hosted a Saturday morning rally in Chicago's Hegewisch community as part of the Chicago Police Department's CAPS community policing program.

Guest speaker Mayor Richard M. Daley told the crowd at Henry Clay Elementary School's auditorium the main issue facing the community is "to protect our children and seniors from drug dealers and gang-bangers. And when I say ‘our' children, I don't mean just ‘our own' children.

"Nineteen infants were killed in Chicago in 2002," he said, a statistic he encouraged everyone to be upset about. He said too much crime in the city involves youth as either the victim or the offender. And, though he noted that the annual homicide rate has dropped, it has not dropped significantly enough to satisfy him.

"We can always do better," he said.

He pointed out how important it is for neighbors to watch out for one another's children, and to bring troubled kids to someone's attention while it can still make a difference.

"Don't cry for a child after they're dead," he said. "Cry for them before they're dead."

He reminded everyone that other people's children are your business, because their behavior does affect you, even if only indirectly.

"It's still your problem, a block or three or four blocks away," he said.

Chicago Police Superintendent Terry Hillard reported last year alone a total of 10,149 illegal guns were seized in Chicago. Of those, 98 to 99 percent of them were seized from drug dealers. Referring to drug dealers and gang members as "wolves and wild dogs," he stressed the need for law-abiding citizens to "not tolerate those who wreak havoc on society."

Pope maintained that "parents need to stop pointing fingers at others and start taking responsibility themselves," and asked everyone to take some comfort in knowing that "the Chicago Police Department is the biggest, baddest gang in Chicago."

Life-long Chicago resident Dave Swiatek attended the rally on behalf of his four children, all of which are enrolled in 10th-ward schools. He said he is pleased with the overall state of those schools and their programs, especially the strict district-wide dress code. According to him, uniforms of white shirts and dark blue slacks have been required for the past seven to eight years.

As for gang activity in the schools, he said, "I don't know of any in the elementary schools. But there are more problems as the schools get bigger and the kids get older."
