Ona Move, Amaris,
There is an excellent interview on this site with Sis. Safiya Bukhari, our warrior ancestor Sista, that talks very candidly about the role of women in the BPP and the repression they endured, not only at the hands of our enemy, but also due to the mindsets of many of our brothas.
The BPP and later BLA women did not all fit any one mold, aesthetically or otherwise. They were/are warriors, scholars, organizers, educators, mothers/grandmothers, each doing her part and definitely worthy of the same respect and honor paid to Bro. Huey, Chairman Fred, and all those regularly quoted up here. If these Brothas were described solely by their physical attributes and nothing was stated about their incredible courage and intellect, it would be a grave disservice not only to them but to us all collectively. We cannot and must not do the same to our sistas.
There were also very specific issues brought forth by our Sistas regarding the "look" of those who were promoted as "the face" of the BPP, and some of the resentment that fomented within the rank and file, everyday Sistas. This is something even the most disciplined comrades must struggle against, obviously even now: the propensity to elevate those with the most popular physical attributes.
We Sistas have to write our own story to tell of *all* those courageous women who contributed in ways large and small, struggled, sacrificed, and fought toe to toe with the brothas against our common enemy. i'm searching for Sis. Safiya's interview up here but i can't find it, but you can also check it out at http://www.prisonactivist.org/jerich...interview.html.
