John Coltrane
Discography
This John Coltrane (September 23, 1926 - July 17, 1967) discography is largely based on Bill Cole's Coltrane discography as published in his book "John Coltrane", and features mostly studio recordings, although I've added few live recordings.
NOTE: This discography is not being updated anymore. Feel free to take the info presented on this page and make your own and better Coltrane discography. Remember to cite this page and Bill Cole's original discography as sources.
The somewhat occasional album titles refer in general to CD editions.
For a Coltrane newbie, check out the new shopping list.
There's a listing #488 for this discography in "1001 Really Cool Web Sites" (Jamsa Press, 1995). -

VikingA Love Supreme: The Story of John Coltrane's Signature Album book cover.
Morning Edition, November 26, 2002 · Saxophone legend John Coltrane's 1964 recording, A Love Supreme, is one of the masterworks in the canon of jazz: most musicians know it. Many have performed parts -- if not all -- of the 32-minute suite.
Now, a new edition of the Coltrane album has been released. It includes the original studio recording plus the only live performance of the complete work. The double CD is a result of research for a new book, A Love Supreme: The Story of John Coltrane's Signature Album. Its author, Ashley Kahn, prepared an essay on the project for Morning Edition.
"John Coltrane is one of those rare musical figures who transcends both his time and category," Kahn says. "Today, in addition to jazz fans, rockers and rappers, head-bangers and hip-hoppers all swear their allegiance to him. And no album in his catalog reaches a wider audience than A Love Supreme, what he called his 'humble offering to God.'"
A Love Supreme was recorded one December evening in Rudy Van Gelder's legendary studio in Englewood Cliffs, N.J. Pianist McCoy Tyner remembers the unusual, almost magical atmosphere surrounding the session. "Rudy that day dimmed the lights in his studio. I'd never seen him do that and it sort of set an atmosphere. There was just something very, very special about that particular session."
Drummer Elvin Jones says Coltrane "never wrote out any music for us. When he played we more or less had to imagine, or feel, how to interpret the song. And it got to the point where I felt I was almost part of his mind, almost telepathic in a way."
The quartet, which also included bassist Jimmy Garrison, needed little more than the seed of a melodic idea when it hit the studio. Tyner adds: "We had been playing some of that music and we didn't know what it was going to be until we got into the studio. And then it all came together."
Coltrane constructed the suit's main theme around a simple four-note pattern -- based on the words "a love supreme."
But A Love Supreme is more than just a musical statement, Kahn says. "It's an unusually complete vision of one man's spirituality expressed through his art. Coltrane used the tools he had available and that he knew: a saxophone, a well-practiced quartet -- even his own voice -- to create music worthy of his creator."
In a 1966 interview, Coltrane discussed religion and spirituality. "I've always felt that even though a man was not a Christian, he still has to know the truth some way or another. Or if he was a Christian, he could know the truth." he said. "The truth itself doesn't have any name on it to me. And each man has to find this for himself, I think."
Kahn says the influence of A Love Supreme can't just be measured by the sales charts. "The truest gauge of this album's effect is in the intensity with which people speak of A Love Supreme and how they pass it on from one person to another -- like a cherished, holy object. And in a way it is."

At first i thought A love supreme was just the title of 1 piece but then i was informed that its the overall title of a four movement composition. When i heard what i thought was just the one piece i was like WOAH I gotta have it. So yesss my first choice will be the love supreme album. I'm not going shopping on my own which is a good thing cause lord knows im gonna need some help. I'm not very experienced when it comes to jazz music buttt i attended my first jazz festival last year. It was beautiful...I was like mannnn what took me so long to find out about this!!! LoL But ive been REALLY getting into it and i only wish i had gotten into this genre of music earlier.Ok i answered wayyy more than you asked. LOL . Peace Brother Kwame...

First of all, I want to thank you Brother Akyeame_Kwame, for giving us this discography…presently I probably have almost everything listed in the discography in CD form. At one time I had all of this discography in album form (analog - the best way to listen) and then eventually tape. Both for the most part, my albums and tapes, got away from me (long story!). If I've missed anything, I've probably heard it, from someone else collection. But I'm sure there is alot I've never heard, for Coltrane was a very prolific composer, improvisationalist and recording artist and also so many things may be out-of-print, that's why searching vintage album collections are eventually essential.
If you ever go to a decent record shop, you will probably notice that besides the CD collection of Miles Davis…Coltrane’s stack is probably the largest Jazz collection there is. I’ve seen it take up two and three roles. Many times they are different improvisational interpretations of the same piece, like there are about 2 complete versions of “Love Supreme” or the three different versions of “I want to talk about you” and so forth.
I can’t start to talk about how Coltrane influenced my life, many of my contemporaries, progressive Black thought, revolutionary poetry and progressive Black music in general.
His music is like a spiritual rudder to the subconscious and superconscious mind of those who listen to him religiously.
There are more books written about John Coltrane than probably any other Black Artist and his name and legacy has been invoked in the revolutionary prose of many poets over the years. Those who understand the power of movement and vibration, enharmonics, oscillation and sound, know that music is not only an art, but also a science. There is a direct correlation to the destruction of our community and the acidic verbiage that is attached to the profaning of sacred rhythms and holy intonations (most gang'sta rap). The enemy knows this, that’s why he feeds his children Mozart and John Coltrane, and ours consume 50cent and Snoop Dog.
Believe me, I’m sure when they found out that light, string theories and all other Quantum sciences where glued together by different frequencies and oscillations they took our sacred music into the laboratories.
Coltrane along with Miles Davis, Eric Dolphy, Ornette Coleman, Dewey Redman, Archie Shepp, Pharaoh Sanders, Thelonious Monk, Sun Ra and Charles Mingus, just to name a few, gave us a whole new generation Black musical scientist. Most of which, have been either ignored or circumvented. This has nothing to do with the Wynton Marsalis movement…let’s be clear about this!

Also Sister Rebel Queen,...Alice Coltrane, who was an essential part of Coltrane’s spriritual development in the last years of his life, is still recording. I heard she has lived and taught as a spiritual Guru over the years. Both of her sons Ravi and Oran Coltrane (both saxophone players) are on here latest release: Translinear Light
Below is one of my favorite quotes…I originally had this quote embedded in a signature at the bottom of all my post, but was informed that whole graphic was oversized…so I just switched to the .Gif movie you see now:
“For us, the Coltranes’ music embodies the idea that if we are to transcend boundaries and create new alternatives for revolutionary social change, then we must dig deep into the spirit,”
-A quote from Assata Zerai, Syracuse University sociology professor and her husband Fanon Wilkins concerning the naming of their daughter, Coltrane, for jazz musicians Alice and John Coltrane. (Ebony magazine article, “The Name Game” 6/98)
...again spiritual Queen Alice Coltrane

in your reference to a lot of the decadent rap that's out here, i remember Baba Charles Finch did a lecture where he mentioned that in Kmt, certain rhythms were illegal...banned because of what they could do to Hue-man and Hue-woman BE-ings...i'm sure these whiteys researched all of these rhythms and put them in tracks behind 50cent.
an older (than me) brother who plays Black improvisational music said something that always stuck with me...he said that "Jazz is what Afrikan music sounds like in a hostile context...in the context of war that Afrikan people found Ourselves in." it is certainly powerful...specifically Coltrane... you said that "when they found out that light, string theories and all other Quantum sciences where glued together by different frequencies and oscillations they took our sacred music into the laboratories"...i'm sure...the effect it has on you and the whole space you are in is undescribable...you can get chills up your spine and feel the neurons in your brain tilting at an axis and spinning at a quickening pace...Black Powerful!!!

"writers treat me like COLTRANE, insane"--Public Enemy (from the song "Don't Believe the Hype")
All a musician can do is to get closer to the sources of nature, and so feel that he is in communion with the natural laws.
John Coltrane
I think I was first awakened to musical exploration by Dizzy Gillespie and Bird. It was through their work that I began to learn about musical structures and the more theoretical aspects of music.
