University 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM Saturday, May 24 ALD March and Rally 12:00 PM - Assemble for Unity March Washington Park (55th and Russell Dr. --1 block east of King Dr.) 1:00 PM - March for Unity and Pan-Africanism 2:00 PM - 6:00 PM - ALD Rally for Pan-Africanism (featuring community and international speakers, cultural performances, vendors, food and youth activities) BACKGROUND INFORMATION ABOUT ALD African Liberation Day was founded on April 15, 1958, spearheaded by President Kwame Nkrumah, on the occasion of the First Conference of Independent African States held in Accra, Ghana. Initially called African Freedom Day, in 1963 at the founding of the OAU the name was changed to AFRICAN LIBERATION DAY to be observed on May 25th. African Liberation Day marks each year the onward progress of the liberation movement in Africa and symbolizes the determination of the People of Africa and African descent to free themselves from foreign domination and exploitation. ALD is being observed in several U.S. cities as well as many countries in Africa, the Caribbean, Europe, and South America.
