ROOTS the movie

Earlier in the 90s and before then this movie was seen by just about every Black family I think. It was owned by many families on videotape. It was allmost a must to be seen in Black college dormitories every year
Now in the year 2005 what do we think most about the movie or how do you remember it most?

It is 99% factual
It promotes too many stereotypes
Its mostly factual but too negative
Its mostly racist B.S.

I saw the movie in 1998, when I was about 13 in middle school. I always thought it gave a false, kinda watered down depiction of slavery.

The movie and Book "roots" is pure fiction, Alex Haley lied about tracing his "roots" he was a good writer and liar....watching roots is like watching Tarzan....

And there are in a way other movies like that but they just dont have to do with slavery. They are basically just full of lies and false descriptions of stories or myths. A movie is not based on real time. I mean thats why they keep you interested with much more jokes or happenings a minute than what you experience in real life. So a person begin that they think they are needed and say life is boring without them. So for the movie makers its a good chance to promote stereotypes. Its the same with television sitcomes and commercials. People say they never watch the commercials. Their subconscious mind does. If you are not disciplined enough whats in your subconscious before not long becomes whats in your conscious.

Who is to say that he doesn't read books? Who is to say that knowledge isn't gained through watching movies?

Nah I am far from the authority on watching tv and gaining knowledge via movies. If I was the authority trust me the movies and the tv programming would be way different than what you all talk about. Thats my time for now I will get back with you on this. And you maybe right about gaining knowledge by watching a movie. I have never seen a person who watched a movie or a tv show and afterwards he/she gained knowledge. Maybe its just me who doesn't agree with movies or television programming.

I'm not denying that. What I'm saying is that knowledge can be gained through a variety of media sources, whether they be the movies, music, the internet, books, newspapers, or the television. To say that one can't gain knowledge from the t.v. or the movies is a bit much, considering that there are programs and movies that do provide knowledge.

You don't have to not watch t.v. or not go to the movies to avoid the crap that some of them show.

I was too young to really rememba ROOTS, been tryen find a download of the movie so I could see it again. Im readen the book right now though.

The original 1977-78? I thought was pretty good, I was however oly 22 -23 at that time, the original nearly caused riots. but the series etc was truly watered down and it's next to impossible to get the original, just a thought , the rifleman ? played his role to good like it was natural for him

Well not ALL Tv, Just Books made into a Movie take Color Purple, Beloved.....Those books are great but when you see the movie it's like you've been cheated information it's just not the same.... Plus just renting the movie might be the easy way to go.

I agree and the reason being the movie adds alot of things to have a negative effect on you. Those things are numerous including music most of all. Music(Mu sick) is dangerous and powerful especially in movies and television. Along with music I can think of a hundred other things that cooperate with it. Music can make you fee sad about something, happy, give you the wrong idea, etc. The so called excitement in the movies is a big smoke screen for underlaying messages. They are not just trying to tell stories. They are telling stories(lies).
