If you ever stumbled upon BET Uncut when it was on the air by umm, accident and made it through the entire hour-long program (hands over eyes, of course), you will be in for a treat after the closing credits. No, there is not an extra-explicit bonus video thrown in just for the heck of it. When Uncut cuts out, it’s time to get inspired. To do what, your dirty mind asks? Well, what else? Pray! That’s right, the geniuses in programming over at BET have decided that it’s a good idea to follow-up BET Uncut with BET Inspiration. In their defense, I can see how they could have thought that this makes sense. The first time I saw an uncut video, I thought about praying, too. But that was for better dance moves and a Coca-Cola bottle body, not for a spot on the other side of the pearly gates. BET’s seemingly absurd programming decision actually isn’t at all inconsistent with African American culture or the hip-hop lifestyle. Black culture in America has long paid homage to the glory of God and the beauty of the booty. The rumps that shake suggestively on Saturday nights are often the same ones that fill up the pews on Sunday morning. How do rappers get away with wearing crucifix pendants and tattoos, while at the same time rapping about selling drugs and pimping, and dancing next to half-naked women? You know who they are. They’re the same guys who thank their rap crew, record label, and a higher power for every MTV Video Award, Grammy, and platinum plaque. There is often a formula for R&B albums: You gotta have a party song, a break-up song, a happy in love song, a sex song, and an inspirational song. Check it out, if you are a lover of R&B as I am, you will find that many of the albums in your collection keep to this formula. I wonder if I was the only one who cringed when accused child pornographer and crowned king of the bump and grind, R. Kelly, sang his song of praise to God, “U Saved Me” during last year’s Soul Train awards. This happened just days after the child pornography charges against him in Florida were dropped. A judge ruled police didn’t have probable cause for the search that led to the discovery of a digital camera that allegedly held photos of Kelly having sex with an underage girl. He saved him alright. The judge, that is. When Kanye West dared to release a rap song all about Jesus, he scored a hit. "Jesus Walks" was nominated for various gospel awards before committees heard the other songs on "The College Dropout" and decided that West was not an ideal nominee. Steering away from the routine booty and bling and releasing a song about faith is respectable. However, there is one line in "Jesus Walks" that is extremely troubling. When Kanye is calling out all the sinners that Jesus hasn’t forgotten about, he inadvertently exposes a truth about the way many view women and sex. "To the hustlas, killers, murderers, drug dealers even the strippers, Jesus walks with them!" What’s wrong with this line? EVEN the strippers?! Not only does Kanye group the strippers with the killers and drug dealers, but he actually phrases it as though the strippers are lucky to be included in the group of folks walking with Jesus. Like the strippers have more to be worried about than the murderers. It is highly unlikely that these lyrics are intentionally sexist, but they are a reflection of our culture’s view of women and sex. African American culture has strong roots in the church. Through all of the trials and tribulations the black community has faced, faith has been a constant that many see as having “brought us through.” It is not at all uncharacteristic for black folks to pray, discuss God, or sing gospel songs in places where other cultures might find it out of place or inappropriate. We have church everywhere. Over the summer, I attended a journalism convention in Atlanta, Georgia. The “mega churches” had their conference there that very same week. As I left a party at one of the hotels with some friends, we saw several families from the church convention packed in to the Hooters restaurant on Peachtree. Not that there is anything morally wrong with going to Hooters, but it was quite a sight to see grandmothers and grandchildren being served by women in stretchy orange daisy-dukes and panty hose -- all this after a day at a church convention. How does this dichotomy of God and grind work? I have to argue that it doesn’t. Religion has been commercialized and politicized in and outside of the black community. All BET, R. Kelly, or any given rapper is doing is playing on the weaknesses and faith of their target demographic. When an accused child pornographer has a hit gospel record, strippers are perceived as worse than killers, and BET Uncut is followed by BET Inspiration, we need to take a break from dancing and praying to think.

This is good news. I will admit though, I am guilty of enjoying Nelly's "Tip Drill" video on "Uncut". |

I agree but the institutional structuring of the church allows it to be exploited and commercialized. Mainly because the glamour and glitz from the pastor 1200 dollar suit, to his flamboyant, yet harmonic sermon, goes hand and hand with commercial advertising (he's selling a concept) Nonetheless, I find it interesting that majority of the hip hop artist emulate this same song & dance and showmen ship

As much as I love admiring every single aspect of the African woman's physical properties (hey...don't trip...I like the mental properties of African women too!!!)...I have to say that I am glad that this show is going to be cancelled.
