Well, since we seem to be posting movies . . .

The Spook Who Sat by the Door

I tried to find full length postings of Quilombo (Palmares) and Farewell Uncle Tom but I only saw short segment series in U-TUBE format and I’m just not in the mood to go into all of that.

Asante Sana Mwane for posting this magnificent movie.

i found time to watch it twice yesterday.

i think the wooden figures at the beginning and end of the film are those of Chibinda Ilunga and a female, probably his wife Luegi. can't mistake the styling. his story as told by remnants of the Luba-Lunda people in the Congo, Angola and North Western to Northern Zambia, is similar in nature to that of the protagonist in the film.

the kingdoms that flourished were the Congo, in Northern Congo and Southern Nigeria, the Luba and Lunda in the center who are also known as the fearful Chaka. he appeared out of nowhere, claiming he was a Luba prince, a highly trained warrior who set to work teaching the people he found here how to fight. the area was getting too violent and they needed it. he went on to lead them in many successful wars against numerous foes. he caused migrations of his people too by asurping the throne, one of which was the brother of his wife, Chinguli, who, according to folklore, walked with his followers, with his eyes wide open, into a portuguese slave ship. i strongly believe this character is the same befamed Cinque of the Amistad "Mutiny". note the similarity in names Chinguli/Cinque. they say his name was french, but i doubt that very much.

relics of the fighting skills Chibinda taught the people here can still be found today. in one area in southern Congo remains of trenches can still be seen at the scene of a fight against the machinegun totting portuguese. the portuguese took a lot of the people who lived here into slavery, mostly to South America. Quilombo, kachasa the brew drank in Brazil, Zumbi, Kandoble (not from west Africa) all names that are still in use among the people in this part of Africa.

      great watch... respect!

The Spook Who Sat By The Door has got to be one of the best movie I have ever seen.
