| Egypt On The Potomac - A Book Review
BOOK REVIEW: EGYPT ON THE POTOMAC: A GUIDE TO DECODING EGYPTIAN ARCHITECTURE AND SYMBOLISM IN WASHINGTON D.C. AUTHOR: ANTHONY T. BROWDER By Kwaku Person-Lynn, Ph.D. It is not often a new book is published on Afrikan world history or culture and you feel thankful for its presence. That is exactly the feeling one will have after reading the latest book by Anthony T. Browder, EGYPT ON THE POTOMAC. The ten square miles of Washington D.C. sit on the east and west banks of the Potomac River. Anyone living in the United States has seen the Washington Monument several times; a tekhen, called an obelisk by the Greeks. However, we have not made the analytical connection of its relationship to the world's most advanced ancient civilization in the Nile Valley. We know this place as Egypt. Its actual name was Kemet, defined "the Country of the Blacks," says Browder. What makes this book so significant, other than its original research, he shows us in plain and easy to read fashion how Washington D.C. is filled with Kemetic (Egyptian) symbolism. This all began with the design demands of the Founding Fathers who were Freemasons. Most of the symbols and principles in Freemasonry evolve from ancient Kemetic culture. It is mandatory for a member to be well versed in Kemetic iconology to rise in the society. Browder was successful in opening up the book with a very detailed explanation of ancient Kemetic history, symbolism and spiritualism. For those who have not explored this area of ancient history, particularly of Kemet, the mother culture of the planet, this will not only be a great eye opener, but a revelation into the beginnings of world civilization. He states, "Understanding the relationship between the Nile Valley and the Potomac Valley requires familiarity with Egyptian symbolism, mythology, and theology before you can identify similar elements within the environs of Washington D.C." Browder did precisely that in the first twenty pages. He provides us with a cursory understanding of Kemetic culture allowing us to have a working knowledge in understanding the Kemetic symbolism in Washington D.C he so strikingly points out in the remainder of the book. George Washington, America's first president, hired French architect Pierre Charles L'Enfant to design the new city and Andrew Ellicott to survey the land. Benjamin Banneker, considered America's first scientist of Afrikan descent, was brought in to outline a Kemetic foundation. According to Browder, "His job was to insure that the new city would be correctly aligned to the heavens so that specific streets, buildings and locations would be properly oriented and favorably influenced by specific celestial bodies," the same as the pyramids and temples in Kemet. One of the treasures of the book is how Browder describes in very elaborate artistic detail the Kemetic symbolism of the exterior and interior of the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Library of Congress, Meridian Hill Park, Arlington Cemetery, the Sixteenth Street Corridor, House of the Temple, Scottish Rite Temple, as well as the specific placement of structures, the association with numbers, placement of facial depictions and much more. It would have been great if Browder had included the one dollar bill in this book, the back is simply Kemetic symbolism. The good thing, that and many other Kemetic symbolisms in the western world can be found in his classic book Nile Valley Contributions To Civilization. This is one of the most important books to come out in decades, and especially a hallmark in American history based on Afrikan principles, symbolism and spirituality. Its 72 pages can be read in less than a day. Browder also conducts tours in Washington D.C. that show the glory of Afrika in the nation's capital. He is also preparing a teachers guide and an interactive DVD for 2005. Listening to Jill Scott's latest album while writing.
