500 YEARS LATER -Powerful award winning documentary about the Afrikan stuggle

500 YEARS LATER -Powerful award winning documentary about the Afrikan stuggle

I would like to introduce you to an epic international award winning documentary film that we have just completed titled 500 YEARS LATER. 500 YEARS LATER premiered at the Pan-African film festival and was awarded Best documentary in Los Angeles in February. 500 Years Later is a powerful direct documentary made and funded by Afrikan people. Too often, we work in isolation and very rarely are our collective resources use for our salvation.

500 Years Later, through dynamic discussions with leading scholars, journalists, artists, rappers, and everyday people, explores not only the history of colonialism and Slavery in Africa and the Diaspora, but also, the scars these brutal institutions have left on our global community. Through a new and at times controversial window, 500 Years Later examines the complex issues of Black identity, urban economics and education, reparations, and racism while re-examining the history of Africa both before, after, and during Slavery/Colonization.

500 Years Later captures the unique essence of the contemporary African and Diasporan experience with riveting cinematography that spans across five continents and over twenty countries including Ghana, Mali, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Zanzibar, France, England, USA, Beirut, Barbados, Grenada, and many more…

Media has generally been very derogatory of African people, our voice, culture and our history is often shown through European eyes. We believe firmly that in order for equality to be served we must begin to freely tell our own stories. We must be active agents in how our image and our history is represented in a multicultural World. We would appreciate any assistance you can give us in letting your community know about this project.

Many thanks for your time

ras k will become famous soon enough
received my copies

greetings all - got my copies, here's my thoughts.

500 years later
a beautiful film, containing images of beautiful people, addressing an issue which many feel has already been discussed, when in fact has not even been approached...

the subject matter is the legacy of afrikan enslavement - particularly in terms of racism, education and identity.

the film features a nice cross section of afrikan academics and activists, and progresses into an inspiring discussion of reparations, changes, and sankofa.

it is the continuation of a beautiful storytelling tradition, where words, music and images all attempt to answer the question why?

why do we occupy a certain position in the world?

it inspires us to alter this position, by showing us some of those trying to do this now, by showing us what we have done, and by discussing what we should be doing in the future.

it employs very thoughtful juxtapositions and imagery choices, and the musical selections and placements are at times stellar.

a necessary and much appreciated work.

ras k

okay - and let me add

as i have come to expect within 'our community' there is some 'tribalism', but i can focus on the good...
as well, there are (on my copy anways) some synchronization issues which in today's technological environment i should find inexcusable - but there are only a couple so i can focus on the good..

after all is said and done, i watched it three times already, always feel good afterwards, and am passing it on to my nieces...
