Arrow Patti Labelle Vs. Antonio 'la' Reid

Did mogul pull artists out of her all-star birthday celebration?
      (October 18, 2005)

*There was drama surrounding Patti Labelle’s 60th birthday celebration in the Bahamas Saturday; a show that included a reunion of the group Labelle with former groupmates Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash, plus performances by Nelly and Kelly Rowland, Ashanti, Gerald Levert, Yolanda Adams and Michael McDonald.

Absent from the extravaganza were Beyonce, Usher and OutKast, as all three acts pulled out at the last minute. According to Fox 411’s Roger Friedman, the close relationship between the performers and Island Def Jam president, Antonio L.A. Reid – who reportedly has issues with the soul diva – makes it more than a coincidence that they all suddenly cancelled.

“The absence of all these people — as well as Island Def Jam's Carey and former Reid associate Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds — raised a lot of suspicion that arms had been twisted or not so subtle suggestions had been delivered,” wrote Friedman.

The LaBelle/Reid rift reportedly began during her stint on Def Jam before Reid replaced outgoing president, Lyor Cohen. LaBelle was supposed to join the roster of Def Soul Classics along with other planned signees, James Brown and Earth Wind & Fire. She recorded two albums for the label, “Timeless Journey” and “Classic Moments.” The latter produced the single “I’ll Stand By You,” a Pretenders cover which LaBelle saw as a new signature song.

But according to Friedman, Reid did nothing to promote the album or the single. LaBelle had to book herself onto the "Good Morning America" outdoor concert series for the morning of July 1, two weeks after "Classic Moments" was shipped, writes the columnist. Also, no one from Def Jam showed up for the performance.

"We had them open the Bryant Park Grill so we could take Patti inside and calm her down," says someone who was there. "When LA Reid showed up, he promised her there would be more promotion for the album and more attention. But nothing happened."

LaBelle did her own publicity and promotion that summer, waiting for Def Jam to do the job it was contracted to do. Meanwhile, planning had begun for the 60th birthday extravaganza in the Bahamas. Def Jam was asked by the producers to foot some of the bill, but “the producers were met with stone silence,” writes Friedman.

Adding insult to injury, LA Reid reportedly approached LaBelle backstage following an Aug. 31 performance of “I’ll Stand By You” that was met with a huge standing ovation at the World Music Awards in California.

A source told Friedman: "LA Reid came backstage and said to Patti, 'What a great song! Why haven't you recorded it?'" LaBelle apparently told him, "It's on the album you've refused to do anything for."

At that point, the die was cast, according to Friedman. Rumors began circulating that Def Jam would drop Labelle. Freidman called the label in mid-September to ask if the company was doing anything special for the singer’s 60th birthday celebration, like recording it for DVD or CD release, or sponsoring it financially.

"It's Patti's project," a spokesperson said of the show, which was taped by UPN for a special to air next month. "We have nothing to do with it. I think we were asked to underwrite a casino night, but that's not for us."

By the beginning of this month, Usher and Outkast were confirmed for the bash, and Usher was even offered a midnight birthday party of his own, all expenses paid. He'd gladly accepted. But by midweek, he and his manager/mother weren't returning phone calls, according to Freidman. Neither was Outkast. Beyonce suddenly begged off as well, although she sent flowers.

By the time LaBelle took the stage on Friday at the Atlantis Hotel and Casino in Nassau, she was ready to vent.

"I've been in this business for 45 years," she told the assembled crowd after a series of memorable performances by her guest stars. "I've done everything myself. The record labels don't care about you. I'm not here because of them. I don't care who knows it. …I told Ivana Trump what happened, and she said 'Fuck' em if they don't appreciate you.'"

Her comments were met with an explosion of thunderous applause.
" Fried, Baked, Grilled, Boiled Or Smoked, The Only Good Pig, Is A Dead Pig...Fuck The Holice!!!"
