Ludacris Responds To Confederate Flag Flap

Ludacris Responds To Confederate Flag Flap
      By Bea Black

Ludacris has responded to the outcry that resulted after the Atlanta, Georgia rapper donned a Confederate Flag during his performance Nov. 12 at the 3rd annual Vibe Awards.

For the show's finale, Ludacris performed the new song "Georgia" with Bobby Valentino and Field Mobb.

Luda said he wore the flag to make a statement and spark discussion.

"This flag represents the oppression that we as African Americans have endured for years; this is a symbol of segregation and the racism that reigned not only throughout the South but throughout the entire United States," said Ludacris in a statement. "I wore it to represent where we came from, to remind people that Ray Charles' original 'Georgia' was written because of that racism."

Charles' version of Hoagy Carmichael's "Georgia On My Mind" was named the Georgia state song in 1979.

Luda pointed out that he later discarded the flag, stomped on it, and brought a different flag bearing the traditional African colors—red, black, and green.

"It is a representation and my interpretation of where we were and where we need to go. Racism is just as prevalent now and if we are not constantly mindful of our history and take charge of it, history is destined to repeat itself because of ignorance.

"In order to move forward, we must never forget where we were," Luda continued. "I hope people continue to question and challenge authority, media and themselves because questioning and challenging can only lead to enlightenment."

I read about this last night and my people's called me to say that Luda had been on the radio. A lot of people I know are of the believe Luda is a an "opressed artist" for wearing the Confederate Flag to the music awards.

Now it is my believe this was just a publicity stunt and was not going to be used in any way to get people thinking on issues of rascism, proverty, extc that are present in the Gulf Coast.

If he was looking to make a statement were a Garvey shirt or something that would make young peopel say I wonder who that is. I remember when Jay Z wore a Che shirt to MTV Unplugged and people were flocking to the computer trying to find out who is was and where the could buy the shirt!. Many people are sheepish, and I wont be surprised if one someone starts mass producing shirts like the one wore and selling them in Our neighborhoods.

The article says, "Luda pointed out that he later discarded the flag, stomped on it, and brought a different flag bearing the traditional African colors—red, black, and green".But the odd thing is I havent heard anyone personaly or on the radio mention that part.

As people that fight the good fight, we know that talk is cheap. We will see what he is doing in the community.....

In order to move foward, we have to remember the past an understand what was done to our ancestors. It's been about five hundred years since we were given our supposed freedom, only to realize that racism is stilll rearing it's ugly little head. We as a people must know the past and learn from it, so that what has happened in the past can/will not happen again. HISTORY WILL REPEAT ITSELF BECAUSE OF OUR OWN IGORANCE IF WE ARE NOT CAREFUL.

I'm not surprised that Ludicris or any other unconscious rapper would do this. I only get surprised (and happy) when they make songs like "Diamonds from Sierra Leone."

Why protest your own flag. I was never aware of the connection. Another stolen legacy.

Maybe I am misunderstanding you, but five hundred years ago we were given freedom? How is that?

We have been free for five hundred years and the racism that existed then, is still here with us now in 2005 and actually i believe that it is far worse.

This is very interesting since this flag shouldnt be anymore offensive than the amerikkkan flag. The same atrocities suffered under the confagerate flag were perpetrated under the amerikkkan flag. Luda wants to sell records. That is his job. That was not at all a conscious statement (to me anyway), it was a farce at best. And just because he brought out the nationalist flag dont mean shit either. Im tired of niggas shittin non the legacy of Garvey and others for their security of black love. Make a video in South and muu fukkas think you Malcolm X. Never mind the videos was about hoes..lol. Ludacris aint nomore conscious than Kanye or any 1 of these fly by night revolutionaries (especially at the times when their records debut) who profit of the ignorant of the masses. Thank god for Limewire & Imesh...lol

Well I'm not understanding you still, we were still slaves in the 1800's, that was only over 100 years ago, supposedly free in 1863. That isn't five hundred years. You are confusing me.
