I'm honoured to start this one crackin'.

I'd be happy to make some recommendations on my most favorites, some of which you may already have or have heard enough. Most of what I like and own is underground, much of it is Indie Rap, but some is mainstream. I own upwards of 500 CDs, and a crateful of wax. I'll just throw out 50 to start with, and come black later for more after I look in the crates. This is a mix of mostly Hip Hop, with some Reggae and Spoken Word.

      1. Anything by Aceyalone (King of Underground West Coast Hip Hop, member of Freestyle Fellowship). If you don't already know Aceyalone, just prepare to fall in love.
      2. Anything by Freestyle Fellowship, Abstract Rude
      3. Haiku D'etat (Aceyalone, Abstract Rude and P.E.A.C.E.). Yes, I'm on Aceyalone's jock. There, I said it. There is a track on this album (West Side Slip 'n' Slide) that has the same tune as the Yin Yang Twins stupid old song "Naggin," except this is a CONSCIOUS track with that same ill melody.
      4. Of course anything by Public Enemy. DJ RBG highly recommends their newest, "New Whirl Odor." Don't forget "Fear of a Black Planet" and "It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back."
      5. I'm in love also with PRT (Poor Righteous Teachers). I especially like Black Business, New World Order and Holy Intellect.
      6. Digable Planets. Album: Blowout Comb. Must have. Whatever you do, don't sleep on this seminal gem. And also Ladybug Mecca's Trip the Light Fantastic.
      7. I've got to give props to a Mainstream conscious artist. Hold it down, Common. Resurrection, and One Day It'll All Make Sense and Like Water For Chocolate. "I Used to Love H.E.R." I'll stick some of the mainstream right in under this number. Mos Def Black on Both Sides, Talib Kweli The Beautiful Struggle, Black Star self titled album, Talib and Hi-Tek Reflection Eternal, Talib- Quality. "Where were you the day Hip Hop died?"
      8. Welfare Poets. Spoken Word artists, and so conscious. I forget the title of their 1st album, but they have two out. It might be called No Taxation Without Representation.
      9. Paris. Just anything by Paris. I particularly like Guerilla Funk and Sonic Jihad, but there's also Devil Made Me Do It and Sleeping With the Enemy. You can't go wrong with Paris.
      10. I'm gonna throw in some Reggae here. Macka B. Global Messenger. This has been my 10-year-old son's favorite album every since he was 8; I had to buy him his own copy. An ex-boyfriend nabbed my copy, and I had to replace it.
      11. Any and everything by Dead Prez, especially Let's Get Free.
      12. The Coup. Prepare to spend some money, but it's worth it. Kill My Landlord, Party Music, Genocide & Juice.
      13. Wu Tang Clan- Enter the Wu Tang 36 Chambers.
      14. Binary Star- Masters of the Universe
      15. KRS-One- Return of the Boom Bap, Edutainment, Self-Titled, Sneak Attack
      16. Can-I-Bus- Rip the Jacker. This brother is so intelligent with his lyrics, and I just really like this particular concept album. If you can handle the roughness and grittiness of Jedi Mind Tricks, check them out as well. Violent By Design, Visions of Gandhi, Psychosocial CD.
      17. Seeds of Wisdom "The Power of Truth is Final." If you didn't already know, these are children of MOVE members, and the CD is just off the hook. I get chills and moisture in the eyelids when I listen to it. Hope you can find a copy.
      18. Nefertiti- L.I.F.E. A classic album.
      19. Oh my gosh, how could I forget my favorite! BLACKALICIOUS!!! Drop whatever you are doing and go get these three albums right now. NIA, Blazing Arrow and A2g. The Craft. I do not exaggerate.
      20. Fela Kuti. Any of Fela's stuff is just blacksolutely necessary. You are not truly conscious if you are not into Fela. Yellow Fever and Coffin for Head of State are your first purchases.
      21. If you know any French (or Spanish), you will absolutely die for Daara J. Even if you don't, listening to this album will make you go out and either brush up on your French or start learning it. The title is Boomerang. The hottest tracks are Le Precipice and Esperanza and Paris Dakkar. Oh, my word. I cannot stress it enough. This is three fine, conscious young brothers from Senegal spitting conscious Afrikan rap. Off the daggone meter.
      22. I'm sure I don't need to tell you about Gil Scott Heron. Any of his albums will work wonders. My personal favorites are Free Will (got me started on Gil Scott) and Spirits.
      23. Last Poets. Another that bears no introduction. Personal favorite is Chastisement.
      24. Black Uhuru. More Reggae. I only do Roots Reggae. All their material is top notch.
      25. Burning Spear. Reggae. Marcus Garvey/Garvey's Ghost.
      26. Steel Pulse. Reggae. Any of their albums, and you can't go wrong. I saw them in concert some years ago and they were phenomenal.
      27. Sizzla. Reggae. Unbelievable consciousness and loyalty to Afrikans and Afrika. Black Woman and Child, Royal Son of Ethiopia, Be I Strong or really any other of his 2 trillion albums.
      28. Mutabaruka. Reggae. Blakk..Wi Blak... if you can afford it these days. If not, any title will suffice.
      29. Tahir. Rap artist produced by Dead Prez. Pulls no punches. I know I'm too old for this, but this music gets me hyped. Sorry.
      30. Piri Thomas. No More Barrio Blues. A conscious Puerto Rican brother. Excellent music and a couple of excellent books to boot. Two words: "Bang, bang." Very passionate and real with his stuff.
      31. The Roots "Things Fall Apart" and "Illadelph Halflife" and "Organix." Two words: Everything live (not Memorex).
      32. Tribe Called Quest "People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm", "The Low End Theory" and "Midnight Marauders."
      33. Visionaries "Galleries." I checked this out with purely no knowledge of who these brothers are or how I might like it. I loved it.
      34. Hieroglyphics "Third Eye Vision." Also, anything from Del (tha Funky Homosapien) or Pep Love.
      35. Jurassic 5 "Power In Numbers."
      36. Zion I "Mind Over Matter."
      37. Saul Williams. Spoken Word. "Not In My Name" and "Amethyst Rock Star."
      38. Gang Starr "Moments of Truth."
      39. Spearhead/Michael Franti "Home", also Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy--"Hiphoprisy is the Best Policy."
      40. De La Soul "3 Feet High and Rising", "De La Soul is Dead." I would be remiss. De La Soul is from the Soul.
      41. Immortal Technique- Revolutionary 1, and ESPECIALLY Revolutionary 2.
      42. Eric B. & Rakim- Follow the Leader
      43. 2Pac- Me Against the World. I don't think I need to defend this for most folk here, but it showcases Pac's most soul-searching moments, probably because it was written during his time in prison shortly after being shot for the first time. We know what incarceration (or any rock-bottom shituation) spawns in creativity and self-study sometimes.
      44. Asheru & Blue Black- Soon Come.
      45. Jeru the Damaja- Wrath of the Math
      46. All of the Above- J Live.
      47. Bad Brains. You have to have at LEAST one Bad Brains album in your collection. They're like the Last Poets of punk, which they--incidentally--invented! I recommend Banned in DC.
      48. Deltron 3030.
      49. Beneath the Surface. This is a compilation album that showcases the talent of some of the West Coast Underground's best and brightest.
      50. Remember Big Daddy Kane? Long Live the Kane.

I want to add, although it would be best to purchase the CDs new when possible, I've obtained a lot of my CDs through an ebay seller called Kentmak I think out of Cali. They all start at .08, that's right eight cents! I've gotten alot of them for just eight cents each plus shipping & handling.

Although I'll always be a die-hard East Coast Hip Hop fan, I've come to deeply appreciate Underground West Coast rap. I never ever liked west coast mainstream rap, because it just wasn't hip hop--just rap. And it had bastardized pure hip hop music, turning it gangsta. I did like a little NWA and even Willie D way back in the day, but all the rest of the stuff I thought was trash. Until I discovered the Underground. There is a most formidable rap underground out west!

Keep in mind, these are my favorites, but that doesn't mean everyone is guaranteed to like what I LOVE.

I hope this list is a helpful start.

Looks like I've run across two long-lost family members.

Raha & Armageddon, what do y'all know about some of those artists?

Reminds me of many gems I left off that are among my favorites. How could I forget Rass Kass Soul On Ice and DJ Shadow Endtroducing and many others you two named. I'd like to add:

      1. Our Souls Have Grown Deep Like the Rivers, which is possibly my top favorite CD I own. It is a double compilation CD featuring poetry and spoken word from some of the best in history.

      ROOTS REGGAE
      2. Bob Marley: Legend, Songs of Freedom
      3. Peter Tosh: Legalize It, and any and everyting by Peter Tosh
      4. Culture: Two Sevens Clash
      5. Abyssinians: Satta Massagana
      6. Augustus Pablo: Original Rockers
      7. Congos: Heart of the Congos
      8. Lee "Scratch" Perry: Arkology
      9. Tougher Than Tough: Story of Jamaican Music
      10. Luciano: Where There Is Life

And the #1 gem I own is...

      BLUE BREAK BEATS Volumes 1-4
No collection should be without it.
      Resident
      Blackalicious
      Guedebuster

Why would you leave off anything, Brother? If it's your music, feel free to list it.

I'm going to have to disagree with you when you said that a lot of your music isn't "conscious". I see the opposite.

Dang...I thought that I was one of the few people who listened to Acid Bath. Glad to see that I am wrong.

      Nice collection, Brother.

      Peace.
