DEA Deals BMF Knock-Out Blow In Multi-State Raid

Demetrius "Meech" Flenory, Leader of BMF

      By: AJ Woodson

A federal grand jury in Detroit Friday (October 28) indicted 30 suspects in an alleged drug and money laundering conspiracy which led to The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) dealing a knock-out blow to the Black Mafia Family (BMF) arresting 30 individuals and seizing $3 million in currency and assets, 2 1/2 kilograms of cocaine and numerous weapons. According to the DEA, The BMF is a large-scale cocaine trafficking and money laundering organization operating a criminal enterprise in Detroit, MI; Atlanta, and Columbus, GA; Los Angeles, CA; Miami, Ft. Lauderdale and Orlando, FL; St. Louis, MO; Greenville, SC; and Louisville, KY. Prior to today’s arrests, DEA and state and local authorities had arrested 17 BMF members and associates and seized 632 kilograms of cocaine, $5.3 million in U.S. currency, and $5.7 million in assets.

Initially based in Southwest Detroit, brothers Terry and Demetrius Flenory, the founders and ringleaders of the group, began their drug trafficking careers selling $50 bags of crack during their high school years in the mid-1980s. Expanding to other cities in the 1990s, the brothers extended their small scale trafficking organization into a multi-million dollar criminal enterprise operating in numerous states.“The BMF was a sophisticated drug smuggling and money laundering organization, led by brothers that operated in 11 U.S. states and had direct links to Mexico-based drug trafficking organizations,” said DEA Administrator Karen P. TandyDEA, Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation (IRS - CI) and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of Michigan joined forces in Operation Motor City Mafia, a 2-year Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) investigation coordinated by DEA’s Special Operations Division (SOD) that began on October 28, 2003.

Information gathered during the investigation revealed that the BMF distributed thousands of kilograms of cocaine and laundered millions of dollars in drug proceeds. BMF members and associates were responsible for trafficking approximately 2,500 kilos of cocaine monthly through Atlanta, where they have a major presence.“

For too many years, these drug dealers have poisoned our streets and cast shadows of fear across our communities. Today's arrests dismantle this drug mob and should significantly impact drug-related crime in the communities where the BMF operated," Tandy added .The organization used sophisticated “traps” (hidden compartments) in stretch limousines to conceal and transport drugs and money. In an attempt to foil drug-sniffing dogs, they equipped some of their vehicles with devices to mechanically expel drug-tainted air.

The Motor City Mafia investigation is part of DEA’s “Street Light Initiative (SLI).” This new DEA umbrella initiative is designed to shine light on the fact that street gangs, either large or small, destroy America’s communities through the use of fear and intimidation in furtherance of their drug trafficking activities. The SLI was conceived last June when DEA led “Operation Silent Night,” which resulted in the arrest of twenty three members of the Vineland Boys street gang in Burbank, California-shutting down a drug trafficking organization charged with numerous violent crimes and the murder of a police officer in relation to a drug trafficking crime.DEA, Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation (IRS - CI) and the U.S.

“The proceeds from the sale of illegal narcotics are funneled through the underground, untaxed economy. This impacts every law abiding, taxpaying citizen,” stated Nancy J. Jardini, IRS Chief of Criminal Investigation.

“In this investigation, the IRS Criminal Investigators analyzed the monetary transactions to track the illegal proceeds of this drug trafficking organization, and the money trail lead to the individuals indicted today. When law enforcement agencies combine resources and expertise, we create a formidable force-the result of which you see today with the announcement of these indictments.”

In addition to DEA, IRS, and the United States Attorney’s offices for the Eastern District of Michigan, the following U.S. Attorney’s Offices were instrumental in bringing these charges: Middle District of Georgia; Central District of California; Middle, Southern, and Northern Districts of Florida; Southern District of New York; Eastern District of North Carolina; Eastern District of Missouri ; District of South Carolina; and Western District of Kentucky.

The following agencies contributed invaluable assistance to the successful outcome of this investigation: United States Marshals Service; Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives; Michigan State Police; Fulton County, GA District Attorney’s Office; Atlanta Police Department; Hollywood, FL Police Department; Muscogee County, GA, Sheriffs Office

U.S. Attorney Stephen Murphy said since the 1990s the ring had distributed more than 1,000 pounds of cocaine in Detroit and reaped more than $270 million in illicit profits. The gang once purchased more than $1 million in Michigan State Lottery tickets to launder drug money used to buy houses and cars, authorities said. The grand jury indictments were issued Oct. 19 but were not unsealed until Friday, the Detroit Free Press said.

BMF Entertainment was working with several artists including Bleu DaVinci, a new and coming rapper, who released an album titled World Is BMF, which was nominated for a Source Award in 2004.

The World Is Ours: The Rise and Fall of the "Black Mafia Family"
      10/28/2005

Demetrius "Meech" Flenory was charged with murder in 2003 in connection with the death of Sean "Diddy" Combs' bodyguard.

Over the past few years, billboards sitting high above the Atlanta skyline boldly proclaimed "The world is ours." These messages to the city came from the self-proclaimed "Black Mafia Family," or BMF, a hip-hop empire conceived and managed by Detroit-bred brothers Terry and Demetrius "Meech" Flenory. The brothers took their bold mantra from the popular gangster movie, "Scarface," starring Al Pacino as a Cuban refugee who rises to the top of the Miami cocaine empire during the 1980s. In some ways, the Flenory brothers' lives have imitated art, with their million-dollar parties, fleet of luxury cars, and ready access to drugs, jewelry, weapons and women. But, investigators know BMF is not an act and want the Flenory brothers to know that the world is not theirs for the taking.

The BMF was a sophisticated drug-smuggling and money-laundering organization operating in nearly a dozen states with direct links to Mexico-based drug trafficking organizations, says the DEA.
Rags To Riches: An Illegal "Empire"

Terry Flenory co-founded BMF with his brother Meech.

The Flenory brothers didn't always live a life of glitz and glamour. They grew up on the rough streets of Detroit during the 1980s, when kids would do just about anything to make a buck, and investigators say Terry and "Meech" were no different. The brothers started off small, selling small amounts of crack, but their business soon grew.

The DEA says the brothers began selling kilos in the early 1990s and by the mid-90s had expanded their business to other cities. With their success, the Flenorys have been able to portray themselves as larger-than-life superstars by flaunting their money, jewelry, women and drugs.

Authorities say that in order to make their business dealings look legit, the Flenorys also manage a rap music label, BMF Entertainment. Investigators add that BMF Entertainment has worked because it's run as a "family" business that has grown into a profitable, corporation-like enterprise over the past 20 years. But underneath it all, the product has been drugs.

      The Fall of BMF Entertainment

On October 28, 2005, the Department of Justice handed down an indictment, naming 30 BMF associates, including a luxury car dealer in Orlando. The DEA seized $3 million in currency and assets and 2.5 kilograms of cocaine. Charges include conspiracy, money laundering and drug possession with intent to deliver. Prior to this indictment, the DEA had arrested 17 BMF members, seized $11 million and more than 600 kilograms of cocaine.

Investigators say the BMF drug enterprise was able to run smoothly, in part because of the Flenorys' connection with Craig Petties, who is currently on the U.S. Marshals 15 Most Wanted list. Petties is a major drug dealer who authorities say has moved over a thousand kilos of cocaine in Tennessee, Mississippi and Georgia. Petties and his fellow Marshals Top 15 associate, David Warner, also smuggled large quantities of drugs across the U.S.-Mexico border in 18-wheeler trucks. Police nabbed Warner in July 2005, but Petties is still at large.

Authorities say that over the years, BMF made millions of dollars distributing thousands of kilos of cocaine. They also bought more than $1 million worth of winning Michigan State Lottery tickets in a money-laundering scheme. But the DEA is confident that the reign of BMF is coming to an end.

"For too many years, these drug dealers have poisoned our streets and cast shadows of fear across our communities. These arrests dismantle this drug mob and should significantly impact drug-related crime in the communities where the BMF operated," a DEA official said.

      Bobby Brown's Nephews Stabbed

A vehicle sought by authorities in connection with the stabbings of two members of singer Bobby Brown's entourage early Monday morning during a fight inside a Buckhead restaurant has been found, police said.

The Cadillac Escalade has been traced to David Cleveland of College Park. Ga. Authorities say he is cooperating with investigators. He has not been named as a suspect.

Police told 11Alive News that singer Bobby Brown was inside Justin's Restaurant -- owned by hip-hop star and producer Sean "P. Diddy" Combs -- at the time of the stabbings about 1:40 a.m., but he was not involved in the altercation between two groups of men at the bar.

Brown escorted a 21-year-old stabbing victim later identified as Shayne Brown to Piedmont Hospital, according to police. The other victim, 20-year-old Kelsey Brown, was taken to Atlanta Medical Center.

Brown’s attorney Maurice Bennet on Monday afternoon said Shayne Brown was in critical condition and Kelsey Brown was in stable condition.

Police say the two victims are Brown’s nephews.

Police are looking for at least three men allegedly tied to a clique known as the Black Mafia Family (BMF).

The stabbing happened about an hour after Justin's had closed down for the night. Brown had performed in the restaurant's Sunday night open microphone event called "Lip Service."

"Generally, sometimes when you have performers or entertainers in town, they like to come by and sing a song or two just because they like the environment," attorney Vincent Dimmock said.

Attorneys for Justin's told 11Alive News that they have two security guards on duty during events and that there has never before been a violent incident there.

"Mr. Combs wants the public to know that this incident was totally unrelated to Justin's Restaurant or to Bad Boy Entertainment," Dimmock said.

The restaurant did not open for lunch on Monday, but was open by the evening. No decision had been made as to whether open mic events will continue.

Bobby Brown lives in nearby Alpharetta, north of Atlanta, with Houston. The stabbing occurred as Bobby Brown is promoting a new eight-episode reality TV show, "Being Bobby Brown," that will debut June 30 on the cable television channel Bravo.

"The series, shot documentary-style, also allows fans and critics alike to see the real Bobby Brown -- as a family man and husband, apart from the headline scandals and allegations that have plagued, and at times overshadowed, the successful musician's career," promotional information for the show states.

The Associated Press contributed this report.
