Afrikan music is older than time. It is born from the hearts and souls of our people, and much can be said without the use of words. However, the words that are spoken in the languages of our ancestors, and only we can understand the language if we open our mind to learn the languages of our ancient people. Today's "rap" music does not speak to us the way Afrikan music does. Afrikan music has a rich powerful history. It is immortal, and today's music can not compete with the music of the Motherland.
All of us may not live to see the higher accomplishment of an African Empire—so strong and powerful, as to compel the respect of mankind, but we in our life-time can so work and act as to make the dream a possibility within another generation.-Marcus Garvey

Angelique Kidjo - shut ya mouth. I love the sista. Her voice is soothing. Her song "Mama Africa" from the album Black Ivory Soul had me African proud, ya dig. I got a secret crush on the sista. If I wasn't married. Benin represent. An ancestral country for me. I also like Baba Maal, Salif Keita and I love the kora traditions of the Mande groups, as well. My wife is Ghanaian so of course I listen to highlife and hiplife occasionally. I also have to give it up to marimba influenced music and those songs that have thumb piano (don't know the real name) in them. I love it, just love it.

I saw a dead bird flyin through a broken sky
Wish I could flap wings and fly away
To where black kings and Ghana stay
So I could get on my flesh right away
But that'll be the day when it's peace
When my gat don't need to spray

I am here at the Southren part of the continent, although my musical taste cuts only within any Afrikan rooted music, I love it when i here and taste a vision of ancestry each time when listening to music. Music is one very pivotal way to connect to the realm of the ancestors, even if the language sounds foreign to you, Afrikans sing such that one's soul start to decipher the words and feel a little wind of Gods breath, and nothing feeds the soul more.

I hear ya! From the traditional drumming to the contemporary music. Brenda Fassie...another Angelique fan checkin' in...Miriam Makeba...Tarika...Women of Mambazo. I need to get my Ghanaian friend out of her books so she can hook me up with of her contemporary CDs.

Keep the artist names coming, too!

BTW the name of the thumb piano=mbira. That's what it's called in Zimbabwe, at least.

Anyways, yes, I do love Afrikan music from the continent.
