Our music has really regressed. Men like Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, Jackie Wilson, and others have been replaced with and by the likes of T-Pain, Lil Wayne, and other boys.

Very true I grew up in the middle of the shift from good music to CRAP.

Most of it began to change when the idea was to just make a quit buck, there aren't that many true artist left in the industry. When you see a real visionary MC or song writer they are always struggling against the flood of this mainstream garbage that keeps the people drowning in a sea of mindless beats with lyrics to match. Often times the lyrics are subliminal messages to have kids reciting the worst possible things later practicing them because everybody is sing it.

So sad when you can't hear good stuff unless you hunt it down

The Temptations were a group of talented brothas.

David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, Paul Williams, Melvin Franklin, Otis Williams, and Dennis Edwards were all remarkable vocalists.

      Paul Williams:

      David Ruffin:

Ruffin, arguably one of the greatest voices in music history, could have been an even bigger star had the drugs not consumed him.

Bob Dylan wrote the song. Sam's response was "A Change Is Gonna Come".

He was killed shortly thereafter. I like his gospel work more than his secular stuff.

Definitely watch the brief documentary. If nothing else, you get to see some rare footage of R.H. Harris, the true godfather of soul and the man Sam Cooke replaced as lead singer of the Soul Stirrers.

Harris' phrasing, timing, and other stylistic traits were copied and perfected by Cooke and every singer that followed.

R.H. Harris & the Invention of Soul

In the early days of gospel music there were two ways of singing. The first style came out of the post-Civil War black universities where groups harmonized on spirituals that were old even then, rolling their R's and clicking their enunciation. The other style was less formal, largely congregational, growing out of the new sanctified congregations inspired by the Azuza Street Revival, singing newly written songs from 1920s songbooks like Gospel Pearls. When RH Harris joined the Soul Stirrers gospel quartet in 1938 he fused the two styles effectively creating soul singing and influencing everyone within earshot.
