Sis. Minnie Riperton / Rotary Connection

TV One's "Unsung" Series is back and just as potent as last year (Donny Hathaway, Phyllis Hymon, DeBarge, Clark Sisters). The detail in these specials is just incredible. This year they've done Minnie Riperton, Melba Moore, Shalimar, Florence Ballard (maybe more, i'm not sure).

Many surprising details came out about the music Sis. Minnie made and most have likely never heard, including her beginning with Chess Records all-female group called "The Gems" under the tutellage of Sis. Etta James (Chicago).

The below is dedicated in memory of her tremendous talent and features her in her second group, Rotary Connection, which most of you are already familiar with.

"We must continue to move forward and do everything we can to outlaw legal lynching in America. We must continue to stand together in unity and to demand a moratorium on all executions. You must stay strong. You must continue to hold your heads up, and to be there. We will prevail. Keep marching Black people. They are killing me tonight. They are murdering me tonight." -- Excerpts of Last Words of Bro. Shaka Sankofa, an innocent man executed by the state of Texas, 6/22/00. www.myspace.com/nattyreb7

..."I saw Rotary Connection at the Dallas International Festival of light and Music. August 1969.
      T'was a 72 hr. outdoor concert
Bigger than Woodstock, at a Speedway by a lake near Dallas
Huge picnic attracted thousands of homeless refugees who had just had their homes destroyed by Hurricane Camille
At first, they sold tickets. Crowds of poor crashed in
so they gave up and let the crowds move freely in and out.
500,000 souls in a vast tailgate town.
A big instant Barrio of tents and car-campers."

      Peace be upon you

I have a CD of Minnie's work with a psychadelic group whom I can't remember the name of, along with The Gems and a couple of solo performances, this Sistarr was/is bad as hell!

She was absolutely incredible, now could that psychadelic group possibly be called Rotary Connection?
