Kanye Calls for End to Gay Bashing

Christian Rapper Kanye West Calls for End to Gay Bashing
      Friday 08.19.05 [5:41 pm]

Kanye West has done it again. First he told the world that rappers could rap about Jesus -- and make lots of money in the process. Now, he's telling his fellow rappers and hip-hoppers to stop bashing gays. In a rather bold move during an MTV interview, West calls for an end to gay bashing in rap and hip-hop.

"West says hip-hop was always about "speaking your mind and about breaking down barriers, but everyone in hip-hop discriminates against gay people." He adds that in slang, gay is "the opposite, the exact opposite word of hip-hop."

Kanye's message: "Not just hip-hop, but America just discriminates. And I wanna just, to come on TV and just tell my rappers, just tell my friends, `Yo, stop it.'"

I noticed this story about Kanye West isn't receiving nearly as much attention from the gay press as the story about Chris Rock's supposed anti-gay rantings. I saw Rock on Graham Norton, a talk show hosted by a gay host and shown on MTV's gay network LOGO. I guess Rock isn't all that homophobic, eh?

Anyway . . . It's nice to see someone like Kanye West standing up and speaking out against what seems to be the norm in hip-hop music: gay bashing. I don't expect his words to change the face of hip-hop much, but I can hope he'll be a great influence on the young people who look up to him.

I don't know. Would have been nice if he would have been just as quick to reprimand rappers for their misogyny (sp?).

well, lol, there's sumthin about Mr.West, Im even startin to find him adorable, I'll explain myself... I wouldnt consider him a "conscious" person, but he tries hard... I mean, he comes out from time to time with this cool vibe givin advices to the people, like Hey Yo, dont buy these diamons, Hey Guys, just stop this bashin, ok? and Im sure at some level he might be exertin his influence in youth, I just would like him to like this rol and start learnin about all what the community Really Needs to hear. that'd be cool

Oh, make no mistake, I don't consider Kanye to be conscious either. Although I don't recall any other rapper ever bringing up the diamonds issue in their music (I actually thought my CD was going to pioneer that effort once it drops--haha!). I think Kanye does try, so I give him points for effort. I mean he tries hard. E'rthing from "Jesus Walks" to "Diamonds" to his collaboration with Common. He tries. Then again, I recently saw Timbaland with a Che T-shirt on. So far, the stuff is just surface level.

The brother will impress me fa real once he begins to defend his Sustahs agains the onslaught.
