Anybody Ever Heard Of "Song Of The South"?

This white man gave me a copy of this movie a few weeks ago. I had done some work in his house and he gave it to me as a tip. "Here ya go... you'll like this. It's your kinda movie." That's what he said to me. I took it home but I didn't watch it right away. But after I did watch it, I didn't know how I should feel. I had mixed feelings toward the movie. I did some research and found out it's a Disney movie from 1946. It's never been released on home video in the U.S.A. (and I can see why). The movie is set in the post civil war era. The main character is a slave named Uncle Remus. The movie kinda makes slavery seem like it was pleasant or like it never exhisted. Disney would never release this movie on DVD these days. After watching it, I can see why. I watched it with my daughter and she loved it because it is animation mixed with live action. I still don'tknow about this movie tho ....check out the video clip.

Uncle Remus is a character from black folktales. I have never read them myself so I don't know how closely adapted this video is. I know Br'er Rabbit is also a popular character from folktales. I'm going to do more research to find out the substance of the tales and how close the adaptations are to the original.

But I'd never heard of this movie actually.

Yea, he's still alive. LOL! I don't mind as much because I'm a collector of movies/films/documentaries- especially rare ones like this one- but I am a little offended by what he said, "It's your kinda movie". I didn't know what he meant at the time because I didn't have a clue what the movie was about. It was just a burned DVD in a blank case.

I have seen this as a child and it really didn't sit right with me then. The whole concept of the thinking that slavery wasn't so bad, basically proved that I would grow into the man that typed this today.

But, there's a scene where the rabbits talking to a black doll he refers to as "tar baby". Yea! I remember that scene with the "tar baby"! I forgot all about that!

I got paid for the job through the company I worked for. He handed me the DVD as a "tip" because I told him I collected DVD's. I noticed he had a big collection of old classic movies on VHS. The man had over 4,000 titles from the 1930's to 1970' (most of them out of print). He went through his stack of DVD's that he converted and handed me this one along with a list (more like a book/catalogue) of all his movies and his email address. I'm half tempted to email him and ask him what he meant by "my kind of movie". LOL!
