When: May 22nd-24th, 2009
Where: The Carlos Rosario Charter School, 1100 Harvard St. NW, Washington, DC
More info: African Liberation Day

This weekend Africans from across the U.S. and Canada will converge on Washington, DC
while Africans across Europe gather in Manchester, England for simultaneous conferences recognizing African Liberation Day with the theme, “One Africa, One Nation: Separated by Colonial Slavery, Reunited by Revolutionary Resistance!”

The events, organized by the Uhuru (Freedom) Movement, are part of a series of conferences held in Sierra Leone, Kenya, England and the U.S., to establish the African Socialist International (ASI), a worldwide party uniting African workers to liberate African land and resources for the benefit of African people everywhere.

The organization’s North American “Revolutionary National Democratic Program” (RNDP) to unite broad sectors of the African community to end U.S. colonial oppression of African people calls for:
  • A land base within U.S. borders upon which to establish an independent African government.
  • The right to return and reparations for all Africans who lost or were forced to leave their homes at the time of Hurricane Katrina.
  • Reparations for and/or reinstatement of homes to the thousands of African people who lost their homes to foreclosure stemming from the U.S. government-supported subprime mortgage scam that targeted Africans and Mexicans as primary victims of capitalist financial institutions.
  • An end to the public policy of police containment of African people within the U.S. and its replacement with a public policy of economic development.
  • The immediate release of all conscious African political prisoners, including those who were arrested because of political actions or statements, or who were first arrested for violations of colonial laws, and subsequently became politically active in the cause of African liberation.
Featured speakers include:
  • Omali Yeshitela, Chairman of the African Socialist International
  • Chernoh Alpha M. Bah, former child soldier, award-winning journalist, ASI Director of Organization

  • Glen Ford, Executive Editor of Black Agenda Report

  • Dr. Aisha Fields, Director of the All African People’s Development and Empowerment Project

  • Chioma Oruh, internationally renowned scholar and activist, speaks across the country on AFRICOM

Workshops will address the pressing concerns facing Africans in the U.S. and worldwide:
  • AFRICOM / NORTHCOM
  • Sustainable Development for African People
  • The Demand for Reparations and the Crisis of Imperialism
  • Immigration
African Liberation Day events kick off with The Black and Proud Show on Friday, May 22nd at 7pm, featuring an array of African music from traditional drumming to hip-hop and salsa meringue, including:
  • Malcolm X Drummers and Dancers
  • DC Casineros
  • Three Generationz
  • Wise Intelligent (of Poor Righteous Teachers), Hasan Salaam and Head-Roc
The 3-day event in Washington, DC is open to the public. Carlos Rosario Charter School is located at 1100 Harvard St. NW. Registration is $20 online (alduhuru.org) in advance or $30 at the door. For more information the public can contact 202-580-8276.
