PRESS RELEASE
DEMONSTRATORS TO PROTEST THE ATTEMPT TO DEAFRICANIZE HISTORY
On Saturday, December 16 at 11 a.m. at the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art members of the African-American community will be present to demonstrate against the DeAfricanization of history displayed by the newly constructed recreation of King Tutankhamen. This reconstruction seeks to redefine, falsify, and rewrite African history.
We question the intention and the implications that this piece will incite by being placed with authentic artifacts including the melanin-dominant bust which highlights and clearly shows his African features and origin. As for the authentic pieces in the exhibit, we seek to highlight by demonstration: the legacy of Pharaoh Tutankhamen as an African king in Egypt, Egypt’s historical and geographical place in Africa, and the legacy of Africa and Africans in both the ancient and modern world.
