African-American Breast Feeding Alliance:

http://www.aabaonline.com/tp42/Default.asp?ID=24582

The African-American Breastfeeding Alliance, Inc. (AABA) was founded because a disproportionate number of African-American women don’t breastfeed; for the ones that do try, less than 20% breastfeed past six months postpartum (according to a 1997 Ross Laboratories study.) This is paradoxical because the worldwide average for weaning a child from the breast is 41/2 years old. AABA’s mission is to: increase the number of African-American women (and women of African descent) who breastfeed; educate African-American women about the infant and maternal benefits of breastfeeding; provide valuable resources about breastfeeding; offer on-going support to women who decide to breastfeed; and collaborate with other organizations that have an interest in the health and well-being of African-American women and infants. AABA uses a holistic approach to educating women because breastfeeding is both a mental and a physical experience.

Hotep family!,
Asante sana Sistah Mekeda, i recently joined the aabaonline website and i have found it very informative and a good support system for myself, a soon-2-be Sistah-Mama who has every intention to breastfeed. i highly suggest this website/resource for all Sistahs who are planning their pregnancies or even for those who have the idea in mind, it is better to prepare yourself with the info about Afreekan motherhood beforehand that at the last minute. as well, there is a toll-free hotline for breastfeeding Sistahs and also a chat room as well. i registered my name etc. and they contacted me afterwards with my password. i really have not been in the chat room before with other Sistahs cause whenever i went to check it no1 was there, but just the same there is a wealth of info at this site. they have been formed especially for US ....therefore they deserve OUR support and encouragement!! this is a MUCH NEEDED and WELCOMED RESOURCE for all Afreekan-Sistah/Queens!

SANKOFA!,

Black Women's Health Imperative, the new name of the National Black Women's Health Project, is a leading African American health education, research, advocacy and leadership development institution. Founded in 1983 by health activist Byllye Y. Avery, it has been a pioneer in promoting the empowerment of African American women as educated health care consumers and a strong voice for the improved health status of African American women. The organization is gaining the well-earned reputation as the leading force for health for African American women. Black Women's Health Imperative possesses national stature as the only national organization devoted solely to the health of the nation's 19 million Black women and girls.
Our mission is to promote optimum health for Black women across the life span—physically, mentally and spiritually.

Black Midwives

www.blackmidwives.org

The International Center for Traditional Childbearing, Inc. (ICTC) is a non-profit African centered organization located in Portland, Oregon. ICTC was created to promote the health of women and their families and to train Black women aspiring to become midwives. We provide recruitment, education, and support to those desiring to serve their community. ICTC encompasses oral traditions from Africa, the Caribbean, and the "Deep South." We educate and advocate through community workshops, study groups, or just one to one support. ICTC is inclusive in its membership. We have an affirmative action policy that we uphold in spirit as well as letter. The early beginnings of the International Center for Traditional Childbearing( ICTC) date back to August 1991. We were then, and are now a grassroots organization, responding to critical health care needs. We are determined that the early death of babies and mothers, an aftermath of slavery and a legacy of poverty, shall be reversed.
