Arrow Menstruation Is Fast Becoming Optional

      Menstruation Is Fast Becoming Optional

      By LINDA A. JOHNSON,
      Associated Press Writer

For young women with a world of choices, even that monthly curse, the menstrual period, is optional.

Thanks to birth control pills and other hormonal contraceptives, a growing number of women are taking the path chosen by 22-year-old Stephanie Sardinha.

She hasn't had a period since she was 17.

"It's really one of the best things I've ever done," she says.

A college student and retail worker in Lisbon Falls, Maine, Sardinha uses Nuvaring, a vaginal contraceptive ring. After the hormones run out in three weeks, she replaces the ring right away instead of following instructions to leave the ring out for a week to allow bleeding. She says it has been great for her marriage, preventing monthly crankiness and improving her sex life.

"I would never go back," said Sardinha, who got the idea from her aunt, a nurse practitioner.

Using the pill or other contraceptives to block periods is becoming more popular, particularly among young women and those entering menopause, doctors say.

"I have a ton of young girls in college who are doing this," says Dr. Mindy Wiser-Estin, a gynecologist in Little Silver, N.J., who did it herself for years. "There's no reason you need a period."

Such medical jury-rigging soon will be unnecessary. Already, the Seasonale birth control pill limits periods to four a year. The first continuous-use birth control pill, Lybrel, likely will soon be on the U.S. market and drug companies are lining up other ways to limit or eliminate the period.

Most doctors say they don't think suppressing menstruation is riskier than regular long-term birth control use, and one survey found a majority have prescribed contraception to prevent periods. Women have been using the pill for nearly half a century without significant problems, but some doctors want more research on long-term use.

The new methods should be popular. A non-scientific Web survey for the Association of Reproductive Health Professionals found at least two-thirds of respondents are bothered by fatigue, heavy bleeding, "really bad cramps" and even anger. Nearly half said they would like to have no period at all or decide when to have one.

For some women, periods can cause debilitating pain and more serious problems.

Two recent national surveys found about 1 in 5 women have used oral contraceptives to stop or skip their period.

"If you're choosing contraception, then there's not a lot of point to having periods," says Dr. Leslie Miller, a University of Washington-Seattle researcher and associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology whose Web site, noperiod.com, explains the option. She points out women on hormonal contraception don't have real periods anyway, just withdrawal bleeding during the break from the hormone progestin.

According to Miller, modern women endure up to nine times more periods than their great-grandmothers, who began menstruating later, married young and naturally suppressed periods for years while they were pregnant or breast-feeding. Today's women may have about 450 periods.

Still, surveys also show most women consider monthly periods normal. Small wonder: Girls learn early on that menstruation is a sign of fertility and femininity, making its onset an eagerly awaited rite of passage.

The period is "way over-romanticized," says Linda Gordon, a New York University professor specializing in women's history and the history of sexuality.

"It doesn't take long for women to go from being excited about having a period to feeling it's a pain in the neck," said Gordon, author of "The Moral Property of Women: A History of Birth Control Politics in America."

She says caution is needed because there's not enough data on long-term consequences of using hormones continuously. Gordon notes menopausal women for years were told that hormone drugs would keep them young — until research uncovered unexpected risks.

"People should proceed very cautiously," she says.

Today's birth control pills contain far less estrogen and progestin than those two generations ago, but still increase the risk of heart attack, stroke and blood clots. The pill should not be used by women who have had those conditions, unexplained vaginal bleeding or certain cancers, or if they are smokers over 35.

But there are benefits from taking oral contraceptives too, such as a lower risk of ovarian and endometrial cancer, osteoporosis and pelvic inflammatory disease. And forgoing periods means no premenstrual syndrome and a lower risk of anemia and migraines, says Dr. Sheldon Segal, co-author of "Is Menstruation Obsolete?" Segal has been involved in research for several contraceptives.

Almost since the first pill arrived in 1960, women have manipulated birth control to skip periods for events such as a wedding, vacation or sports competition. Female doctors and nurses were among the first to block menstruation long-term to suit their schedules, said Susan Wysocki, head of the National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health.

"They were then more comfortable recommending it to their patients," said Wysocki, who uses a vaginal ring to prevent menstruation.

The idea gained momentum after Barr Pharmaceuticals launched Seasonale in November 2003. It's a standard birth control pill taken for 12 weeks, with a break for withdrawal bleeding every three months. Amid wide acceptance by doctors, sales shot up 62 percent last year, to $110 million.

Publicity for Seasonale made women wonder, if just four periods a year are OK, why have any at all?

Users of Pfizer Inc.'s Depo-Provera, a progestin-only contraceptive shot lasting three months, usually are period-free after a year or two. There's now a generic version, but the drug can thin bones.

And many women have been getting extra prescriptions so they could continuously stay on birth control pills, the Ortho Evra patch or the vaginal ring, rather than bleeding every fourth week. That schedule was set by the original birth control designers to mimic normal menstrual cycles. But the extra prescriptions have led to insurance company hassles.

"What Seasonale did is get rid of that nuisance," says Dr. Peter McGovern of University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.

New extended-cycle contraceptives will do the same. Wyeth is hoping by late June to get Food and Drug Administration approval to sell Lybrel, its low-dose, continuous birth control pill; approval also is pending in Canada and Europe.

Also in June, FDA should decide whether to approve Implanon, a single-rod, three-year contraceptive implanted in the upper arm that maker Organon USA has been selling it in Europe for a decade.

Berlex Inc. is developing its own birth control pill for menstrual suppression.

Barr, aiming to be a leader in extended contraception, last November bought the maker of ParaGard, an intrauterine device that blocks periods in some women. Barr's new product Seasonique, a successor to Seasonale, likely will get federal approval at week's end.

Dr. Patricia Sulak, who researches extended contraception at Texas A&M College of Medicine, applauds this new trend. The doses in standard pills are now so low, she said, that having seven days off them raises the risk of pregnancy.

"This redesign is way overdue," she says. "It's going to be the demise of 21-7."

      Greetings Nefertiti!

Sister, I agree with you 100%. The imbalance that this type of practice may be causing on the female reproductive organs, not to mention the overall well being and health of the person.

I know these white people are sick. Sad to say though, Afrikan women are falling for these trends and quick fixes as well. These women have no idea what the long term effect on the body would be if they decide to practice this type of unhealthy reproductive choices.

Much appreciation sister for your valued input.

Peace & Blessings of Afrikan Love!

These will be the same women that we will be hearing about 15-20 years from now who will be unable to have children because this type of thing
      messed them up.

      Oh well.

That's what happens when you try to mess with nature.

Yes...they say the period isnt necessary and all of that.If it wasn't necessary then why we born to start that function at puberty. The white man is soooo invalid and anti-nature..He/She hates everything dealing with nature/universe/God etc.. I love being so intimately connected with the moon.I did once fall for the okey doke about not wanting a period...my cramps were unbearable since i was 11 years old..so i got on the pill..But I was so off balance, and crankier when i was taking all those synthetic hormones. When I told them to take me off of it,they were like what..you dont want to be on birth control..they were in pure shock...the white nurses were looking like I am in the process of healing myself, and advise against pills/no periods...all that anti-woman propaganda. Oh and if you haven't noticed the commercials...the black woman doctor is pushing the birth control patch..and the white woman is pushing pregnancy and ovulation tests...

They're so confused they take drugs to have 6+ kids at one time, Now they want to make menustration "optional". I wish they could take these pills so it can mess up their reproductive system, The less of them the much better the world is.....
I am not a "woman of color". I hate that term with all my heart. I am a "Black" woman. And I am not stupid enough to believe that women of other races whose skin happens to have a smidgeon of coloring...feel some kind of solidarity with me. They do not. No one on this earth has been more betrayed than black women have, and so called "women of color" don't give a shit about me. Do not call me a "woman of color"...I am a "Black" woman.---Kola Boof (2006)

If you watch the commercials, they preach about the pill, patch, etc for 97 % of the commercial, then they say real low and fast "May cause stroke, heart attacks, blah blah blah" then at the end, praise the drug again insane...
Doesnt the body need to be RID of this? Wouldnt it accumulate
Something that can alternate the reproductive system in such a way cannot be good. If you dont want children, dont have sex, or use a non-hormonal type birth control

Adverse Side Effects of The Pill

      0 Not allowed! Not allowed!
Adverse Side Effects of the Pill
      by Djehuty Ma’at-Ra

The birth control pill, created in the 1950s by the insane and diabolical American endocrinologist Gregory Goodwin Pincus, and approved for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for millions of American women in 1960, the birth control pill was the result of a medical accident, believe it or not. Pincus hooked up with Boston gynecologist John Rock, a Roman Catholic (whose faith teaches against contraceptive) who had been researching infertility, and the two began experimenting with chemical drugs to produce an oral contraceptive for women. In the midst of their experiments, a batch of synthetic progesterone was inadvertently contaminated with the pharmaceutical drug mestranol, an estrogenlike substance. The scientist discovered that the two hormones worked in tandem to block conception.

Pincus first became notorious in the 1930s, when he achieved in vitro fertilization of rabbit eggs. He later hooked up with Hudson Hoagland, also an endocrinologist, and they founded their own research facility, the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology, which was financed by private and government grants, and by the drug industry. In 1951, aided by biologist Min Cheuh Chang, Pincus started testing the contraceptive value of the hormone progesterone, which was derived from the root of the Wild Yam.

The Worcester experiments attracted the attention of Margaret Sanger, America’s leading birth control advocate since the 1920s; Sanger notified her friend McCormick of the project. McCormick and G.D. Searle, the Chicago pharmaceutical firm, became Pincus’s most generous benefactors. After the accidental occurrence of the progesterone contamination with the drug mestranol, Searle began manufacturing the progesterone-estrogen compound for extensive testing and this became the drug approved by the FDA in 1960, which was the year the social engineers introduced the sexual revolution in America which has caused the degradation and degeneration of American females in American society in general, and the rampant and epidemic female reproductive disease onslaught that kills hundreds of thousands of females yearly and which causes millions of females to suffer a host of female-specific pathologies, including fibroid tumors, ovarian cysts, vaginal, uterine, cervical, and breast cancer; endometriosis, PMS, menstrual disorders and irregularities, menopause, blood clotting, and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).

The birth control pill was marketed to females under the banner that women could now (like men, white men in particular) engage in free for all sex without having to worry about becoming pregnant. Procreational sex was exchanged for “recreational” sex, which really means “wrecking creation (God’s creation).” The one thing the sexual revolution did for American women was greatly lower their moral standards and values, and the results are very clear today with just about every gangster rap song calling females “hoes” and “bitches”, and billboards of scantily-clad and half naked females posing in the most lustful and sexually seductive ways. But to a lot of females, this is freedom. Freedom of what? Expression? Expression of what? No or low values and morals?

Well, all I can say is that “you can’t fool Mother Nature”, but a fool will try to fool her, to his/her own detriment. Even though man (the white man, social engineer) told you that your body is yours and you can do with it whatever you want (that man approves of, of course), you should know that your body (flesh) is not yours and belongs to Mother Earth (Nature). Your physical body is a loan from the Great Mother, and if you don’t stay abreast (take care) of your personal loan, Mother Nature will call in the loan, forcing you into foreclosure on YOUR body. Plain and simple!

And what is this foreclosure on the female body? Death – resulting from female reproductive area-specific diseases and pathologies.

God via Mother Nature gave females a natural form of birth control called the “rhythm method” as well as “astrobiology” and certain plants such as wild yam root. These are natural, safe and sane, and effective methods of birth control. They have no adverse side effects, unlike the pill and more modern forms and devices of birth control.

The natural method of the “rhythm method” is almost forgotten in today’s society with the dumb-downing of American females, in addition to females being busy and on the go in a fast-paced society (just like males are). Plus, since Americans don’t do well in mathematics, the “rhythm method” is more of a burden than a benefit in contrast to just popping a pill into your mouth. After all, Americans live for convenience, and by any means necessary.

Also, most American females have been cut off from their femininity and lunar essence due to adaptation into a male-dominated social order and structure, where the days of the month are based on the masculine (solar) rather than the lunar (moon). When a month has 30 days in general, you are dealing with the solar calendar. America and the Western world use a solar calendar (Gregorian calendar) to gauge time. This creates an adverse effect on females, who have a “lunar” inclination and galvanization. We find in the Bible that God has ordained and fixed the moon to gauge the seasons of the year: “He appointed the moon for seasons…” Psalms 104:19

A calendar based on the moon has 28 days, not 30 days. Twenty-eight is a feminine number, as well as a lunar number. Generally, females have a 28-day “moon” cycle. Now, when a female understands this fact and the fact that the Creator bestowed the female body with two major hormones – estrogen and progesterone, and divided these hormones into phases lasting approximately two weeks each (14 days), a female has the correct knowledge and understanding of the time and can successfully perform the “rhythm method.” But it’s hard to have rhythm when you’re out of sync with the earth’s natural rhythmic vibration, as most females (and males) today are.

A female has a two-week estrogen period where she is not prone to conception or fertilization, and a two-week progesterone period where she is very fertile and prone to conception. Progesterone means: ‘Pro’ = “for”, ‘Gester’ = “gestation”, and ‘One’ = hormone. So, progesterone is the hormone conducive to gestation or pregnancy. Estrogen refers to “Estrus”, which is defined as a periodic sexual heat of animals. As Solomon said in the Bible, there is a season and a time for everything, and this includes sex and procreation. Yes, there is a season for sex, it’s called “mating season” and occurs in the Spring season. All mammals except for the college-degreed and God-professing humans (Westerners) know this.

Knowing her hormonal periods would allow a conscious female (woman) to successfully apply the mathematical rhythm method.

Pertaining to “astrobiology” the ancients who planned the conception of Kings knew well, a woman can conceive only during a certain approximately two-hour period of each Lunar month, when the Sun and the Moon are exactly the same number of degrees apart they were at the moment of the woman’s first breath at birth – which may be discovered simply from the planetary positions (astronomically calculated) contained in any ephemeris. Without exception, a female can conceive at no other time than this approximately two-hour period, easily determined if her birth data are known. But who in the hell has time for all of this mental work? This is America! We don’t think for ourselves as good consumerist slaves. That’s somebody else’s job for which we PAY them, because we are too lazy and/or ignorant to do simple and basic things for ourselves. So for many of us, our destinies are in the hands of someone else, which is a damn shame.

So instead of all this mental calculating and tabulating, why not just conveniently pop a pill? After all, it’s convenient, right? Yes! But the real question is, is it safe? Is the birth control pill safe and are there any adverse side effects to taking the pill? Well, let’s look at it (some of the adverse side effects of the pill or oral contraceptive).

Oral contraceptives are UNSAFE DRUGS with numerous side effects which can cause: permanent infertility, high blood pressure, blood clots, strokes, heart disease, kidney failure, varicose veins, breast cancer, uterine cancer, and liver cancer. Oral contraceptives also deplete a female’s body of iron (anemia), zinc, iodine (weight fluctuation), and selenium (sex and hormonal nutrient); and not to mention, all B vitamins!

The Los Angeles Times newspaper reported five years ago that females who took birth control pills for more than ten years have an 80% chance of developing some form of female reproductive area cancer. This is scary!

Is sex worth dying for? Only an oral contraceptive junkie can answer this question.

I understand that many women/females take or took “the pill” as a remedy to keep their skin from breaking out. This is insanity! The Bible (Leviticus 17: 11) tells us that “the life of the flesh is in the blood”, so if we have a skin condition, then we have an internal blood condition and we need to cleanse and detoxify our blood, as the skin manifests the condition of the blood. Plain and simple!

Birth control pills stops the cleansing process (via the skin, which is an elimination organ) and keeps this waste matter and junk in the body, which becomes cancerous or is collected in sacks in the womb area called tumors. Tumors, ovarian or uterine, are nothing but sacks or trash bags that the body’s intelligence created as a kind and merciful gesture to save the female by collecting the waste and storing it in sacks or bags so as not to overly pollute the blood, because after all, most female’s eliminative channels are not working properly, especially their colon.

Birth control pills or oral contraceptives greatly reduce the flow time of female’s menses. But this is not healthy. Where do you think those thick, dark colored blood clots come from? Or, what do you think these dark colored blood clots are? Old, thick, coagulated menstrual discharge! This is why when a female wisely comes off “the pill” her flow is dark and heavy, which is a good thing because now she’s releasing her TOXIC WASTE, which if would have stayed in her womb chambers, would have undoubtedly developed into some form of cancer.

The risks of “the pill” undoubtedly outweigh the illusions of the benefit.

The pill or oral contraceptives (as well as all contraceptives) greatly throw off a female’s rhythmic and moon cycle, to her great detriment. This is why after a female comes off “the pill”, her cycle is very irregular and the female doesn’t have a clue of when it’s coming or going.

Birth control pills and contraceptives throw off the female glandular system by deceiving the body. In fact, birth control pills work inside a female’s body by deceiving the brain (house of God), making the body think the female is pregnant, when in reality she really isn’t. The inundation of an exogenous synthetic progesterone-like hormone (with synthetic estrogen) suppresses ovulation (releasing of fertile eggs). But as was stated earlier and infra, “you can’t fool Mother Nature.” When a woman is pregnant, her natural endogenous levels of estrogen and progesterone rise and further egg production is stopped. The hormones levels continue to rise during pregnancy, signaling the brain to stop secreting its egg-stimulating hormones. The contraceptive “pill” hormones mimic this effect and continually dupe the brain into thinking that pregnancy has occurred, thus suppressing ovulation.

So what can a female do to get off “the pill” (but still practice birth control) and to also detoxify her temple after taking “the pill” or some other kind of contraceptive (arm plants or shots)? A female can take the herb “wild yam root.” Mexican wild yam root is the best, safest and sanest, and effective natural oral or internally taken form of birth control. It is the highest natural source of bio-progesterone. Too much progesterone suppresses ovulation, even though progesterone is the hormone conducive to conception. In fact, pharmaceutical-grade oral contraceptive was first derived from wild yam root, by extracting the chief alkaloid (or constituent) called “dioscegenin”, so why not return back to the original source of birth control?

It is vitally important that a woman/female know that it takes approximately seven weeks for wild yam root’s contraceptive properties to take effect, so intimacy or sex must be abstained from during this time or the male should use a rubber (which I am not an advocate of nor am I promoting their use) if the sex drive is too high and abstinence from sex or intimacy is out of the question. A female should take seven (7) capsules of wild yam daily for the effects of this herb. If taken in extract form, 2-3 tablespoons should be taken daily. The great thing about wild yam root is, should a female decide to become pregnant, she can start the conception process the day after discontinuation of wild yam root without having to detoxify her body.

After a female comes off “the pill”, she should take “carbon” or ‘activated charcoal” (1 teaspoon in a glass of water for 30 days) in addition to the following herbs: Motherwort (for hormone balancing), Bayberry (to reduce toxic waste accumulations in the uro-genito tract), Black Cohosh (regulates hormonal production), Chaste Tree berries (hormonal balancing); Yarrow, Burdock, Dandelion, Goldenseal, Chaparral, and Red Clover tops, which all have a superb cleansing effect.

      Greetings Everyone!

Much appreciation to all who has participated in this very important discussion.

I posted this thread and I am happy to see at least here at Assata
Forums we are are not falling for this type of nonsense.

Too many of our Afrikan Queens frustrated by not having more natural
options for birth control are trying a lot of these types of health options, when they are so unhealthy.

All of the issues raised here in this discussion are very good and valid. What I would like to see be done in our future as Afrikan Queens is that we take the time to counsel the younger sisters when age appropriate about these types of unhealthy choices that has such long lasting side effects on their physical bodies. Brothers talk to your wives, girlfriends, daughters and sisters in general if you are comfortable discussing the issues and share this information with them.

Issues like these affects the whole Afrikan family, and all should help to make sure we are not following these kkkrackkkas in choosing to use all these unhealthy options for reproductive health and overall well being of our Afrikan women.

The nightmare stories always comes out after the fact and after the damage has been done to our women. They have to know that they have choices and they need to take the time out to find healthier ones that will not damage their chances of having children in their future or cause havoc on their overall physical health as a whole.

Lets continue with the discussion, learn and share the information.

      Peace & Blessings!

A womb-man's menstrual period is a very sacred time, for this is when a woman is most spiritually attuned and most sensitive to her surroundings. She is more open and able to recieve messages from the Most High Creator that will aid her in living a more harmonious existence. And a womb in tune has a peaceful time during her menses. However this advanced monthly spiritual state can exist only if a woman is truly purified.

This is not the case in a so called normal woman who bleeds four or more days coupled with excessive womb pain and the passing of clots. Such a woman is prey to toxic thoughts ,eats toxic foods, and is less spiritually in tune.A womb-man who defiles her body...will encounter suffering in her womb-and will show up as jealousy.greed.depression,and overpowering ego...

What a womb-man eats is closely related to her cycle. For example if she eats alot of flesh foods (chicken, beef, fish etc) it will make her cycle longer. Eating mucus creating foods will as well (dairy products, eggs, white bread, sugar) make her cycle longer because it causes mucus related bleeding. Our cycles show how pure we are as far as diet. The word period..originated it from it being a period..like the one at the end of a sentence. That was because afrikan womb-man's diet was mostly fruits and vegetables and lots of water. Therefore she was in a purified state. Her "period" would last only maybe a few hours. Womb-men today can have the same purified state if we go back to our original diets of fruits, vegetables and water. The reason why womb-man has pms..is because her body is out of balance..too full of toxins...so she goes off on her king-man and watoto. Womb-man whom is in toxic state will also crave toxic foods...like chocolate and dairy. If you think about it..how chicken and beef is killed is usually through violence..so the violence is in the bloodstream of the womb-man because it was in the bloodstream of the cow/chicken..people dont look at it like that but it's the fact of the matter. A womb-man should fast 2 days before her cycle...to get the toxins out as well as give her colon a rest. The colon is right above the womb...so if a womb-man's colon is too full around her cycle..she will have cramps because the colon is so heavy and pressing upon her womb..a heavy colon will also cause infertility and blocked fallopian tubes.

I was on the pill a few years back...my body didn't like it, so I dropped it.
A few months later, instead of practicing abstinence *sigh* I picked up Depo...
...and my womb cussed me out for it! I vowed never again would I put that synthetic mess in my system.

Just the other day, I was talking to one sister who was telling me that if I married while still in school to not have kids until I graduated so I would not have that responsibility of academics and family. I was like ok--I saw her point...until she said to get an IUD.

Then I was like, "Oh, heellll no!" She told me that unless I wanted to "be like her" (she has had 3 kids in the past three years...and the baby is still on the breast), that I'd "better get that IUD." I'd rather have 3 blessings, and my career plans detoured any day than have an IUD!

Menstruation is definitely natural, but there is a natural way women can stop their monthly periods, called Tai Chi Self Massage. It allows the precious nutrients lost during menstruation to instead be used for the physical and spiritual nourishment of the woman. In his book Choosing Life: How to Avoid Extinction , Dr. Michael C. Frost describes the benefits of and provides instructions for performing Tai Chi Self Massage.
