ATLANTA (AP) - A panel of Georgia lawmakers signed off Thursday on a plan to create a Confederate heritage month, even as legislative leaders reacted coolly to a push to apologize for the state's role in slavery.
Sen. Jeff Mullis' bill would dub April as Confederate History and Heritage Month to honor the memory of the Confederacy and "all those millions of its citizens of various races and ethnic groups and religions who contributed in sundry and myriad ways to the cause of Southern Independence."
The unanimous vote by the Senate Rules committee _ which sent the plan on to the full Senate for consideration _ comes days after black lawmakers announced plans to ask the state to officially apologize for its role in slavery and segregation-era laws.
Virginia's legislature last month passed a resolution expressing "profound regret" for the state's role in slavery, and lawmakers in Missouri and Congress have proposed similar measures.
Democratic Rep. Tyrone Brooks, chairman of the Georgia Association of Black Elected Officials, said it's discouraging to see the Confederate month proposal moving ahead after leaders of the Republican-controlled House and Senate said they're not in favor of apologizing for slavery.
"Georgia needs to recognize and apologize and atone for its part in the slave trade, as Virginia has done," Brooks said. "Until we do, I think there will continue to be resistance from African-Americans and others who are serving in the General Assembly" to efforts like Confederate month.
Mullis, a Republican, said his bill was not a response to the slavery-apology movement.
"I'm from Chickamauga, so it seemed pretty appropriate for me to do something to commemorate the War Between the States," Mullis said. His family owned land at the site of the Battle of Chickamauga, the Civil War's second-bloodiest battle and the South's last major victory.
Mullis has supported efforts to create a Civil Rights History Month in Georgia but opposes a slavery apology. "If I had done something personally, yes, I would apologize," he said.
The state's branch of the NAACP called the push for a Confederate month hypocritical.
"Although the supporters of the Confederate history bill feel responsible to honor the past deeds of their ancestors through official governmental action, they resist all notions that they have any responsibility to apologize to their ancestors' victims through official governmental action," said Edward Dubose, president of the group's Georgia chapter. "That reeks of hypocrisy."
Brooks, who said black lawmakers plan to officially introduce their slavery legislation next week, said he hopes Mullis' bill at least will encourage discussion. He said he's not necessarily against the idea of a Confederate month _ as long as similar recognition is given to the state's black history.
"All of Georgia's history should be promoted and respected and highlighted," he said. "Hopefully this will lead us into some meaningful dialogue."

"all those millions of its citizens of various races and ethnic groups and religions who contributed in sundry and myriad ways to the cause of Southern Independence." mf be straight lying trying to make it seem as if Southern Independence wasn't purely for white men, the continuence of slavery, and overall extermination of NDNs.

I have a question. Did the Northern Crakkka's as well have any love for Black Folk trully. There is a new book out that speaks about the North's role in the Slave Trade. Also, I thought GA was progressive? Well I guess the Black folk in Atlanta do not have all of that Power that many folk are running down there. I guess the Crakkka's in GA are as wicked as anywhere else. I guess we should rule out the Mass Move to Atlanta.

I have lived in a lot of places and I would say Atlanta is the best place to be black in the US. Economically a lot of black people here are middle class and the education I received in ATL was mostly focused on the black struggle. Unfortunately though, GA is still a red state even though Atlanta is mostly black and there is a big gay community here.
They truely are is as wicked as any number of crackaz that populate any other state across the U.S. Thats why the focus of our mass movement in terms of relocation should not be within the U.S. If every African in the U.S chose to populate only one state it wouldnt make any difference because we would still be behind enemy lines.

GA progressive lol! In the middle of the hood is a street named after Gen. Robert E. Lee the person who even Northern craKKKaz respected heavily! Hell this is FEMA retention center (Ft. McPhearson) in the middle of the hood too! I don't know if there is a book out on that specific topic but it's clear the North was in absolute not in support of African People. The civil war in ameriKKKa, as all wars, was fought over money and power. With the South as a separate country the South would be a millions times more powerful and richer than the North (as with Africans in America setting up a country or space in Africa under Our own guides). The North felt they had to stop that and they did though the South to this day runs all the economics, culture, and especially the politics of ameriKKKa. This will never change cuz all of the old money and blood ties are in the South. But anywayz check out some quotes from Ab Linclon and it will explain the North's attitude towards Us.

AfroNinp, U know there will be a demostration for that confederacy stuff them craKKKaz was goin' nuts over the confederate flag being taken down. What you think they going to do for a confederate celebration day.

Klan activity is rooted deep within the history of Georgia. Places like Stone Mountain, where there is an actual mountain with the faces of confederate generals such as Robert E. Lee carved in the back of it as a memorial, and also being labled the site where the second kkk was founded in 1915 still serve as evidence, and a constant reminder of its racist history. I think the present day and future of this state is only the reflection of its past, and we know that Georgia isnt the only place in the U.S where whites choose to perpetuate the mind state of what this country was built upon, that being racism. With that being said there can deffinetly be no progressivness in terms of how we looked upon here in the U.S nomatter the location, because as I said before as long as wer'e in the U.S period we will remain behind enemy lines.
