| My Letter to Assata Shakur
Sister Assata, I would just like to let you know that it was your story that sparked a change in my life. Not that I didn't hear stories of injustice before yours but I must say that it was yours that broke the camel's back. It was frightening but at the same time inspiring. My political beliefs were maturing before this point but I'll never forget the day I became familiar with your story. A senior at my university did a research project on your exile entitled "Re-Examining Assata Shakur: Political Terrorist or Political Refugee". When I looked up your name and read countless stories of your trials and the amount of police brutality you faced, I was appalled and disgusted beyond words. Finally, I was able to pick up your autobiography and I just couldn't comprehend the things you'd gone through. I couldn't wrap my mind around your strength. You had to be strong to endure the things you endured and manage to keep your convictions in tact. I, for one, would not have blamed you had you broken in the process. But you didn't. Something in you was strong enough to hold on to your revolutionary dreams and the political reality. This put a lot of things into perspective for me. See, I'd read a few books and thought I was down with the struggle. Your story made me reexamine things. Was I strong enough to endure one-tenth of the things you did? Could I manage to hold on to my beliefs in the face of pain, torture, solitude? Before I read your book, I had no idea what the struggle was like in the trenches. Thank you for being an inspiration, a teacher, a guide. Thank you. Peace and Blessings, Fenix

Take my youth, my labors, my love, my all and do thou when I shall have died for thee, take me to thy bosom, an untamed, untamable African." -Hubert Harrison |

It's hard to follow a thanks like that from sister Fenix but I'll try.... First off happy blessed earthday and many more to come. Next I want to say thank you myself for being an inspiration to me. During some of the hardest times of my life in the last year I couldn't count the times I either ran to your book or this forum to easy my mind. Reading what you have been through. It showed me if you can go through all you've went through for your people my own personal issues are just the tip of what we as a whole have to deal with. Your story has showed me that no matter what is going on that if you have something to stand for that you can survive anything inorder to complete your goal. Thank you and I Love you like my 3rd mama JABOOM
