PRESS CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT: Congresswoman Lee calls for federal intervention at TSU
Washington, DC - Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee will be asking the U.S. Department of Education to intervene in connection with Governor Perry of Texas' intent to place Texas Southern University in conservatorship while at the same time the state is continuing to operate under an outstanding federal civil rights violation. The Department of Education's policy requires the Office for Civil Rights to strictly scrutinize actions by states that might "impose undue burdens on black students" during the desegregation process. The community believes that the proposed conservatorship is tantamount to a closing in strict violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
