The National Historic District of Freedmen’s Town has lost hundreds of Historic homes, many Historic Churches, and the Historic Brick Streets that are about to be inappropriately removed and damaged.

The J. Vance Lewis property, later known as ‘Van Court’, was first purchased by two Freed Women in 1874, just a few years after emancipation. A daughter married J. Vance Lewis (born in 1863). He was an author and one of the first Lawyers in Freedmen’s Town. Mrs. J. Vance Lewis worked in the Carnegie ‘colored’ Library.

They assisted others to buy land and create businesses.
