S.H.A.P.E. Community Center will host its 28th Pan-African cultural Festival an outdoor festival celebrating the African-American cultural experience, ancestry, heritage and tradition from throughout the African Diaspora with music, dance, storytelling and other expressive art forms from the Caribbean, East, West and South Africa and other areas showing the rich cultural influence of African-Americans. This exciting weekend is filled with laughter, fun music, food and lots of entertainment for the entire family. Unlike many of the other festivals that are held in Houston, this citywide festival is offered absolutely
FREE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC. The Festival will focus on the broad scope of African Culture. Pan means all - African Cultural Experience. with music, dance, song, drums, food and family -- in three days of
wholesome and healthy fun for the entire family. Rainbow Colors and Flavors!
The outdoor market boasts the finest in wearable art and crafts of every description ,handmade by some of the finest artists, artisans, jewelers and designers in the area. Talented chefs prepare a wide variety of scrumptious foods to be savored. The fare ranges from traditional soul food to flavorful Caribbean dishes, to African, Latin, Asian, and vegetarian food.
Fun for the Whole Family
The Festival preserves and perpetuates the traditions and culture of the African Diaspora (Afro-American, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Latin). The highlight of the Festival, as always will be the ongoing live entertainment, provided on several performance stages. Participating artists will represent the full spectrum of the global community we serve.
The Family entertainment Program will feature creative and talented entertainers and artists who will present a variety of contemporary music, dance and poetry relating to various cultures and traditions throughout the African Diaspora. Kids will enjoy games, puppetry, face-painting and many other fun activities.
The Festival Market place consists of vendors who sell an array of merchandise ranging from African Sculpture and prints to educational materials. Our marketplace also has a wide selection of delicious international cuisine.
This year’s Pan African Cultural Festival will commence on Friday evening (May 25, 7pm-Midnight) at our new Harambee Building (3903 Almeda Rd.) with a Cultural Celebration of music and dance from the African Dispora, followed on Saturday (May 26) an all day festival (11:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m) showcasing many of Houston’s notable as well as emerging performing artists, visual arts and crafts exhibits, children’s activities, food and other displays and presentations of interest to family and community members.
