Amiri Baraka will be headlining this year's Kings and Queens of Spoken Word.
The production will mark Amandla Productions’ 17th season of presenting world renowned performers to the Houston area, including master composer/pianist Randy Weston, the late "High Priest of Hip" Oscar Brown, Jr., vocalist Ayanna Gregory, Jamal Koram The StoryMan, Wo'se Dance Theatre, as well as story weaver and founder of the National Association of Black Storytellers, Mary Carter Smith who recently passed.
Baraka is an acclaimed poet, playwright, activist and the author of over forty books. He has been the recipient of many accolades including the Obie, the American Academy of Arts & Letters award, the Johnson Medal for contributions to the arts, Rockefeller Foundation and National Endowment for the Arts grants, the PEN/Faulkner award, and the Poet Laureate of New Jersey. His work has had a seminal impact on the landscape of American literature. He is an activist dedicated to social justice. He has taught and held posts at Yale, Columbia, George Washington and SUNY, Stony Brook. Reviewing his latest collection of short fiction, "Tales of the Out and the Gone" published by Akashic Books, the New York Times said; "In his prose as in his poetry, Baraka is at best a lyrical prophet of despair who transfigures his contentious racial and political views into a transcendent clarity.”
Amandla Productions is dedicated to exposing young people to the richness of the African American aesthetic, as well as supporting the efforts of emerging poets, writers, and performing artists by introducing them to a larger community. This year's new voices include the poetics of Black Lotus, Deep, Jerome, and Marcel Murphy. Two of the most popular bands in Houston, Funk Bank and Legacy, will accompany the poets and perform original compositions. International DJ Kool Emdee will rock the house with his flavor of spinning and mixing rhythmic beats from African to America. In addition, accomplished artist Israel McCloud, will provide Visual Media examining the complex yet simplistic bond between poetry, jazz, and visual art. By abandoning traditional methods and restrictions McCloud redefines art through embracing a collaborative approach.
