Kuumba House Dance Theatre, Houston’s premier African dance company, in celebrating its 25th anniversary will present The 2007 Juneteenth/Harambee African Heritage Arts Festival performance concert “Moves & Music of the Motherland” June 30, 2007 at 8pm at Miller Outdoor Theatre.

The Harambee African Heritage Arts Festival is celebrated every odd year. This year it is in conjunction with our celebration of Juneteenth.

Free to the public, the Festival will feature Jabali Acrobats from Kenya; Giwayen Mata an all-woman group of African Drummers located in Atlanta, Georgia;and Umdabu, a dynamic dance company from South Africa, currently residing in Birmingham, Alabama, as well as Kuumba House Dance Theatre dancers and musicians.

This will be a night of diverse African art forms - drumming, acrobats, African music and dancing.

Originating in Mombasa, Kenya, the Jabali Acrobats offer a breath-taking performance that exemplifies the link between athletics and the arts. The incredible acrobatics, contortions, tumbling, human pyramids, and chair balancing skill of these performers, turns to dance with the Congo Snake Dance, the Flamingo Limbo Bar Dance, Skip Rope Footwork techniques and comedy to electrifying music.

Giwayen Mata (pictured) is an award-winning, dynamic, soul stirring, “all-sistah”, dance, percussion, vocal and African Dance Ensemble. The company reflects the beauty and richness of traditional Africa and exhibits techniques exemplary of the arts throughout the African Diaspora. Giwayen Mata is an ever-evolving experience for her members and audiences.

Based in Birmingham, Alabama, Umdabu Dance Company is a dance theater focused on the presentation and preservation of traditional and contemporary South African history and culture, particularly that of the Zulu people. Under the direction of veteran South African dancer and choreographer, Johannes "Jomo" Xulu, Umdabu presents a high-spirited performance of traditional dances of war, hunting and other celebrations.

Kuumba House Dance Theatre will open the night with its usual exuberant and mesmerizing presentation of contemporary South African dance repertoire.

This year is the 25th anniversary of Kuumba House Dance Theatre as a performing arts organization with the purpose of creating, teaching, performing, presenting and preserving the African cultural experience in the Houston community and abroad.

The concluding event of the 2007 Juneteenth/Harambee African Heritage Arts Festival will be presented at Miller Outdoor Theatre, June 30, 2007 at 8:00pm.

This event is free to the public and suitable for all ages.
