These are what the person was supposed to say in the hall of Maat in the presence of Anubis, Thoth and Ammunhut? Kind of like to refute negative actions?

One would want to reach the afterworld capable of reciting these without any hesitancy or guilt. Your heart weighed against a feather, the feather would have to be heaviest, confirming your innocence of wrongdoing. Its been some time since I studied these confessions and the allegories surrounding their purpose. good post. i need to brush up on this topic.

Thirty eight years ago on 12/04/2009 the united snakes murdered Fred Hampton & Mark Clark, this date also marks the 6 year anniversary of the launching of this site in solidarity of these martyrs.

I remember hearing also that when you rise in the morning before you start your day you say I will not ... You say that before reciting all 42 negative confessions. and at the end of your day you say I have not ... and you say that for all 42 negative confessions.

      Greetings,

Actually that's 41, because it seems you repeated "I have not eaten my heart", unless the second time (without an explanation in brackets), the same statement is given a different meaning.

This is an interesting post, because this is the third version of the precepts of Ma'at that I have come across. My first encounter was with '42 Laws of MAAT (TRUTH)'. Several years later, someone posted '42 Ideals of MAAT' on facebook, which I came across. And now these '42 Negative Confessions.' Especially for the following two versions which I will list, I have been unable to match the laws side by side, line for line. With this latest version, I think I would be able to reconcile most of them:

      42 Laws of MAAT (TRUTH)

      1. I have not done wrong
      2. I have not impoverished family or friends
      3. I have not done evil
      4. I have not committed murder
      5. I have not destroyed food offerings
      6. I have not acted deceitfully
      7. I have not robbed things that belong to Pa Neter
      8. I have told no lies
      9. I have not snatched away food
      10. I have not uttered evil speech
      11. I have attacked no one
      12. I have not slaughtered the sacred bull
      13. I have not been overcome by anguish
      14. I have not laid waste the ploughed lands
      15. I have not been an eavesdropper
      16. I have not spoken against anyone
      17. I have not become angry without just cause
      18. I have not committed adultery
      19. I have not committed sin against my own purity
      20. I have not violated sacred seasons
      21. I have not done homosexuality
      22. I have not been one of anger
      23. I have not stopped my ears from listening to truth
      24. I have not stirred up strife
      25. I have not caused anyone to weep
      26. I have not lusted or committed fornication
      27. I have not avenged myself
      28. I have not I have not not worked grief
      29. I have not acted with violence or insolence
      30. I have not judged hastily
      31. I have not angered Pa Neter
      32. I have not talked too much
      33. I have not done harm or evil
      34. I have not cursed the king
      35. I have never befouled the water
      36. I have not spoken scornfully
      37. I have not cursed Pa Neter
      38. I have not behaved with arrogance
      39. I have not been proud or boastful
      40. I have not disputed over possessions
      41. I have never thought evil or slighted Pa Neter
      42. I have not commanded anyone to kill

One should be able to say these each and every day in the affirmative.

      42 Ideals of MAAT

      1. I honour virtue
      2. I benefit with gratitude
      3. I am peaceful
      4. I respect the property of others
      5. I affirm that all life is sacred
      6. I give offerings that are genuine
      7. I live in truth
      8. I regard all altars with respect
      9. I speak with sincerity
      10. I consume only my fare share
      11. I offer words of good intent
      12. I relate in peace
      13. I honour animals with reverence
      14. I can be trusted
      15. I care for the earth
      16. I keep my own council
      17. I speak positively of others
      18. I remain in balance with my emotions
      19. I am trustful in my relationships
      20. I hold purity in high esteem
      21. I spread joy
      22. I do the best I can
      23. I communicate with compassion
      24. I listen to opposing opinions
      25. I create harmony
      26. I invoke laughter
      27. I am open to love in various forms
      28. I am forgiving
      29. I am kind
      30. I act respectfully of others
      31. I am accepting
      32. I follow my inner guidance
      33. I converse with awareness
      34. I do good
      35. I give blessings
      36. I keep the waters pure
      37. I speak with good intent
      38. I praise the Goddess and the God
      39. I am humble
      40. I achieve with integrity
      41. I advance through my own abilities
      42. I embrace the all

Personally, so far I have found that the first version I learned is the 'strictest'. Perhaps also one can look at the first two as affirmations, and the third as goals, or attributes one acquires as a result of keeping the principles.

      Wow! I found another one (version);

      I WILL NOT DO WRONG
      I WILL NOT STEAL
I WILL NOT ACT WITH VIOLENCE
      I WILL NOT KILL
      I WILL NOT BE UNJUST
      I WILL NOT CAUSE PAIN
      I WILL NOT WASTE FOOD
      I WILL NOT LIE
I WILL NOT DESECRATE HOLY PLACES
      I WILL NOT SPEAK EVIL
I WILL NOT ABUSE MY SEXUALITY
I WILL NOT CAUSE THE SHEDDING OF TEARS
I WILL NOT SOW SEEDS OF REGRET
I WILL NOT BE AN AGGRESSOR
      I WILL NOT ACT GUILEFUL
I WILL NOT LAY WASTE THE PLOWED LAND
I WILL NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS
I WILL NOT SET MY MOUTH IN MOTION(AGAINST ANY PERSON)
I WILL NOT BE WRATHFUL AND ANGRY EXCEPT FOR A JUST CAUSE
I WILL NOT COPULATE WITH A MAN’S WIFE
I WILL NOT COPULATE WITH A WOMAN’S HUSBAND
      I WILL NOT POLLUTE MYSELF
      I WILL NOT CAUSE TERROR
I WILL NOT POLLUTE THE EARTH
I WILL NOT SPEAK IN ANGER
I WILL NOT TURN FROM WORDS OF RIGHT AND TRUTH
      I WILL NOT UTTER CURSES
I WILL NOT INITIATE A QUARREL
I WILL NOT BE EXCITABLE OR CONTENTIOUS
      I WILL NOT BE PREJUDICE
I WILL NOT BE AN EAVESDROPPER
      I WILL NOT SPEAK OVERMUCH
I WILL NOT COMMIT TREASON AGAINST MY ANCESTORS
      I WILL NOT WASTE WATER
      I WILL NOT DO EVIL
      I WILL NOT BE ARROGANT
I WILL NOT BLASPHEME NTR (THE ONE MOST HIGH)
      I WILL NOT COMMIT FRAUD
I WILL NOT DEFRAUD TEMPLE OFFERINGS
I WILL NOT PLUNDER THE DEAD
      I WILL NOT MISTREAT CHILDREN
      I WILL NOT MISTREAT ANIMALS

One omission that I find in these is that they have left out 'not impoverishing family or friends'. I feel that 'I will not copulate with a woman's husband/man's wife', are one and the same...
