The Rejection of Slavemaster Surnames

Why do you think that we should, as Afrikan people, reject slavemaster surnames?

My family name has not changed. There is a lot of pride in my family, therefore unless a majority of us change, I will keep my surname. I am, however, planning to participate in a naming ceremony in order to recieve my Afrikan name.

Slavemasters Surname

I changed my whole name. All of it. Didn't want to be anywhere close to Europe.

I have both an African name and a slave name...and although I don't like my slave name, I'm not going to change it anytime soon. The reason why is because (and I saw one of my comrades do this and I loved it and I got the idea from him)...when the police come looking for one name, I will use the other...and vice versa.

At the point that I become "caught up" where I can't run that game anymore...I will officially change my name.

Hotep family!,
My slavemaster name(s) are Morgan (my grandmothers' maiden name) Forbes (my grandfathers' name) and Ferguson (my dad), although i was adopted & raised in the Augustin family so then i was given Augustin as my legal last name. i have always been REVOLTED & DISGUSTED by my slavemaster name(s) and i was once shocked to discover that there are Forbes in Europe who share the same "family name" with my mother.... i do not associate myself with the identity of a Morgan, Augustin, Forbes or Ferguson, i do know that these are the names that my ancestors carried for many yrs. thru NO FAULT of their own. however, i would also like to know how and when our slave names were chosen and under what circumstances did whitey decide who was going to receive what name? did whitey just choose Morgan/ Forbes out of a "lucky draw" that he decided to play one day on the plantation or is this the actual name of the whitey that owned my family?? i myself, felt the urgent need to change my slavename due to the fact that i have experienced great shame, anger & disgust knowing that i share the same name as whitey slavemaster descendants in Europe/North America and therefore by keeping my slavename i am generally saying "OH THANK YOU WHITEY FOR ENSLAVING MY ANCESTORS AND DESTROYING MY AFREEKAN INHERITANCE! I WILL CONTINUE YOUR LEGACY OF ENSLAVEMENT BY CARRYING ON YOUR NAME AND PRAISING MY CONTINUAL MENTAL AND SPIRITUAL ENSLAVEMENT!!??" i think not!

I deeply wished to have a meaningful naming ceremony so when i travelled to Ghana i asked the elders that i met there to conduct a naming ceremony approx. 1 wk b4 i left Ghana. i chose the name KENTAKE NEFERTARI MERIMUT, however legally i am still known as Sonji Augustin, however i instruct my friends & family to call me KENTAKE, although many of them do not!! i do hope to change my name legally, but here in Quebec they say that you have to have a GOOD REASON to change your name, if "they" do not agree with the reason then you are not able to have the right to change your name, and "THEY" ARE THE 1S THAT DECIDE WHETHER THIS REASON IS VALID OR NOT, by the way you have to write this long-ass letter of explanation and also pay $100 to submit the application, if they dis-approve of your reason "they" keep the $100 and you get no reimbursement of it. so i want to get a lawyer in advance in the future so i can deal with these muthaf%$#@!* the way "they" need to be dealt with....that is MY STORY of why i reject my slavemaster surname, anyway to me and my ancestors i am KENTAKE NEFERTARI MERIMUT and ALWAYS WILL BE!!!!

note: however, i would like to really know what my REAL AFREEKAN ANCESTRAL NAME is or atleast where my ppl were stolen from as to have a better idea of WHO I REALLY AM....

SANKOFA!,
Sistah Kentake.

I was born with a slave name. I recieved my Afrikan name five years ago and legally changed it last year.

I believe that our names are fundamental in reaffirming our purpose, culture, and identity. I was always disturbed by people referring to me by some European name. I began to feel like they were in fact talking to some one else and not me.

In some ways I see my current name as expressing a transitional phase in the Sankofa process. I actually look forward to expanding my Afrikan name as I move further along in the process of ReAfrikanization.

Brother have you considered using your Akan soul name? It corresponds to the day of your birth.

I was born on Wensday so the male name that corresponds to that day is Kweku. Now i don't have any idea of how to pronounce it or the actual
meaning of this Akan soul name. So can i get some help. And that link is dead

Nisamehe ndugu (my apologies). Here's the link:
http://www.assatashakur.org/forum/sh...ad.php?t=10400
It discusses the attributes of people born on the particular days.

I'll have to defer to the Twi speakers to advise you on pronounciation.
